Places to Stay East Coast Malaysia

Hi, We are planning another trip to Malaysia next March 2008, we will be staying in Langkawi for one week and then flying to East Coast to Kuala Terranganu for another week. Please can anyone give me information on accommodation for our family of 6 adults, 2 are teenagers aged 16 and 14 years so we would need 2 or 3 rooms. Our flight will be arriving in the evening so we dont want to travel too far on East coast but would like a beach hotel or apartments. Any suggestions I would be grateful for. Many thanks

Places to Stay East Coast Malaysia

Hi JLB1,

Most nice resorts are on islands...in Terengganu, there%26#39;re a few islands that are of interest Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang. But it%26#39;s quite a distance from KT (short for Kuala Terregganu) Airport and you have to take a boat ride to the islands at Merang Jetty.

A decent beach hotel in KT will be Primula Beach Resort, a short distance from the airport. Check out this website http://www.primulaparkroyal.com/ The beach will not be as nice as say the islands.

Alternatively, you can fly into the city of Kuantan (in the state of Pahang), where there are nice beach resorts along the cherating beach. Nearest to the airport will be the Hyatt Regency at the Teluk Cempedak. The beach is not the finest but more of a proximity factor. The hotel is nice though. Check it out at …hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp

However, the best mainland beach can be found at Cherating beach, which along it are dotted with resorts....the most well known being the Club Med. Your kids will love the concept of club med as there are loads of free activities all day long (actually it%26#39;s accounted for in your package) where you can eat all you can, drink all you can incl. wine and beer, with the exception of expensive alcoholic drinks). Because you paid in a package, you don%26#39;t have to worry about if you overspend on food or drinks. Check it out at http://www.clubmed.com.au/cherating/index.php It%26#39;s an hour%26#39;s drivce from the Kuantan Airport but I really think it%26#39;s worth it.

Check out the reviews from TA on Kuantan hotels...

RioJ Many thanks for your replies, we will be looking at the websites you have suggested.. We did look into Club Med Cherating last year but were told we had to book through the UK website and it was coming out to be very expensive, if we are able to book on the Malaysia website we would be getting a good package deal..... we will check it out. We are very excited about our visit again, we are bringing my parents this time for their first trip to Malaysia so are planning it well in advance to make it a special trip for them. many thanks JLB1

Hi JLB1, you will have to enquire with Club med about this...not sure if they impose such riduculous price policy by nationality. I have to say, you do plan ahead...which is good...

On another note if diving and snorkelling are your thing, it will be worthwhile to change your time of flight and arrive early so that you can take a boat ride to the islands. However, please check whether it%26#39;s still a monsoon season. You would not want to stay on an island and be stuck with torrential rainfalls! Though the offcial monsoon season on the East coast is from Nov-Feb (that%26#39;s when some of the resorts will close), it%26#39;s best to check out first when you%26#39;re in Malaysia, you never know these days...

Redang will have better accommodation than Perhentian, though some might say Perhentian is less spoilt by humans than Redang. But really, it%26#39;s still a good place with picture perfect beach and really nice underwater experience. Having said that, you can still island hop to Perhentian from Redang. Here%26#39;s one website you can check out: http://www.redangisland.com/

I hope I have not given you too many options but you can take your time in planning ahead!! :)

RioJ ,You are being most helpful thank you, I think we have now decided to stay in 2 different places on East coast as we have found we can fly from Langkawi to Kuantan with Malaysia airlines where as Air Asia says we can only fly to Kuala Terranganu so this gives us a lot more options. I love planning our trips and I find Tripadvisor one of the best to use to find helpful and honest suggestions. My husband and teenagers im sure will love to go snorkelling and my parents will be wanting to visit natural beauty spots and love wildlife , so Im hoping we can find somewhere inbetween to suit us all. best regards JLB1.

You can also try Firefly airline, which is a subsidairy of MAS. (official acronym for Malaysia Airlines System). It has its hub in Penang island, which operates low cost shuttle service to places like Koh Samui, Phuket , Kuala Terrengganu, Kota Bharu and Kuantan and even to Langkawi. You have to fly into Penang first before it flies out to Kuantan or other places.

Remember a stay at Club Med includes all meals and activities. Sometimes we feel they are expensive and forget 3 meals a day does add up.
