Water filter, leech socks and mosquito net question

Hello,

Our travels are as follows:

Kuching-Bako park-Mulu_Kota Kinabalu-Mnt.Kinabalu-Semporna-Singapore

1/SHould I bring the water filter for our travels. I know we can buy botte water in the cities but I am not sure about two places:

Bako national park and Mount Kinabalu (they say that they have water tanks along the traip, but does the water need to be treated?). Do you have any experience with either of them. I%26#39;d prefer to leave the filter at home as it is a bit bulky, but do not want to drink unsafe water.

2/ what%26#39;s you opinion on the leech socks, it seems we may need them at Mulu, as we%26#39;ll attemp to do the Pinnacles trail

3/ we have a mosquito net, I am tempted to bring it along for Bako and Mulu, any comments here?

thank you!

Water filter, leech socks and mosquito net question

Hi Boleslav,

It%26#39;s difficult to find a totally undeveloped place around here. To answer your questions:

1. I think you can leave the water filter. Chances are Bako National park will have an F%26amp;B Outlet that you will never be far away from and even if you are, you guides / hosts will provide you with the necessary. Mt. Kinabalu has a water point at the start and then again at Laban Rata. I went between the two points with 3 liters of water, and I drink a lot. The water in the tanks are not treated, but is also not exposed and not stagnant. I drank this water on the way down and had no ill effects except for perhaps a few grains of sand on my teeth.

2. If you have hairy legs you can go without leech socks - haha. They%26#39;re not nice to see sucking on your legs so if they%26#39;re not taking up that much space, bring em along. Unless you fancy flicking leaches of your legs part of the Borneo experience.

3. Mosquito net is always good - if you can save the space you won%26#39;t be packing a mosquito net, but a comfortable night%26#39;s rest :o)

Water filter, leech socks and mosquito net question

Phil - here are my notes on my own questions:

our travels were: Bako n.p., Mulu n.p., Mt. Kinabalu, Uncle Tan, Mabul island

Waterfilter: no need to bring it along

At Bako we had a room with a kitchenette and the water kettle was provided, so we boiled the water and let it stand

Mulu n.p.- same as at Bako (we stayed at the Mulu park at the Longhouse- very nice room)

Mt.Kinabalu - got the water from the accommodation before the trek and there were water tanks during the trek

Uncle Tan- the staff sells the bottled water and makes tea and coffee free of charge

Mabul island- stayed at the Longhouse Arung Hayat and the drinking water was provided 24 hrs free of charge

leech socks: there were some leeches during our Pinnacles treck (around camp 5 really), few at the Uncle Tan, but we had no problem as we wore long pants and sturdy socks. Did not see any leech on Mt. Kinabalu either

mosquito nets: no need

Bako - windows have screens

Mulu- windows have screens

Mt Kinabalu-no need

Uncle Tan - the mosquito net is provided

Mabul - no need for the screen
