Carrying Ringgits from England

Hello

Can anyone help? We are travelling to Malaysia for our honeymoon in July and want to bring most of our spending money with us in cash (we will then store this in the safe in our hotel). Can anyone tell us what if any, the restrictions are on carrying money from England into Malaysia? I remember when we went to the USA there were dogs out sniffing for money as there was a limit on the amount you could carry. Does this work for Malaysia?

Thanks, hope you can help

I don鈥檛 know the exact answer, but a normal amount of money to cover a holiday shouldn鈥檛 be a problem at all. Even if you鈥檙e a big spender. I think you%26#39;d get the exact details from the Malaysian embassy website, or by calling the embassy.

But鈥?please check your travel insurance and see how much you鈥檙e covered for IF your room safe gets broken into and cash gets stolen. Mine only covers me for a couple of hundred quid in cash 鈥?while laptop, cameras, jewelry, travelers cheques etc is covered in full. Room safes DO get broken in to, they鈥檙e not fool proof, not by a long stretch. It鈥檚 much easier and much safer to just use your bank card to withdraw cash at the many ATMs. Although it will cost you a few percent more than exchanging cash, but hardly a vast amount.

If you intend to take cash only take it in Sterling. You can then change it at Maybank or one of the local money changers. That way you will get a better rate than you will find in the UK

You can more or less take in as much as you like in Sterling, its bringing it back out in ringgit thats the problem.

A lot of the UK banks won%26#39;t sell you ringgit these days.

Better carry cash in POUNDS and change it in RM in MY. Besides, I think its definitely better than in UK. I used to be student at Birmingham and whenever I travel outside UL, my heart will ache whenever I change into foreign currency. The ratge is so EXPENSIVE, usually the difference between buy/sell is ~0.3. Over in MY %26amp; SG, the difference is usually ~0.01-0.03. That%26#39;s at least 10x cheaper.

Like Albert mentioned, you are better of getting RM in MY. Even out local credit charges for foreign rates are equally good and quite closed to what you can get from money changer. I used it often whenever I travel oversea. Therefore, I am certain I will never be paying high exchange rate and best of all, ther eis noi service or tax charges.... What you see is what you get...

Malaysian government practises capital control. You won%26#39;t be able to exchange Malaysian Ringgit anywhere in the world except in Malaysia. Though this might be lifted soon. There%26#39;s a restriction on the amount of cash you bring in. The exact amount not sure. And there%26#39;s a restriction on Malaysian Ringgit to bring out.

Hi

there is a limit on the MYR you can take into Malaysia, thinks its about MYR500 but a good travel agent with travel exchange will advise, so do a Albert says and take GBP. Or use your cards and be sensible about them (don%26#39;t let them out of your sight, pin security, care for kloners on ATM etc). You do get better rates on your credit cards than at exchange places.

TravellingMitch,

';You do get better rates on your credit cards than at exchange places.';

That is news to me.

Hi

Thank you to everyone who has responded, we have already exchanged some money, however, from now on we are going to leave it at that and use cards for anything else we need.

Freddie,

If your going to use credit cards in Malaysia you really need to take care. Dont let the thing get out of your sight, even to the point of watching it be swiped. Cloneing is very much done in Malaysia.

Use your card to get cash from Maybank. Keep your c/c useage to a minimum.

Take some Amex cheque%26#39;s and save yourself the worry !
