Husband and I are visiting Langkawi first time in Sept. Appreciate suggestions as to area to stay - dont want to be captive audience at resort miles from no where....like somewhere we can meet locals and enjoy lifestyle.

The most touristy area is around Pantai Cenang so you need to be looking at hotels such as Pelangi Beach, Casa del Mar, Fragipani Resort, Holiday Villa to name but a few. Not knowing what your budget is, these are just a few suggestions.

Malibest on Pantai Cenang. But only if you manage to get the treetop cabins... google them...

The above link will show you Malibest, there is no restuarant, bar or swimming pool. The location is good and the treetop cabana%26#39;s are nice.
If you want something more i.e. full resort facilities, all of the suggestions made by Lesley are very good.
We stayed at the Pelangi %26amp; were very happy with the hotel %26amp; location. It%26#39;s only a few minutes to all the restaurants.
Most of Langkawi resorts do tend to be isolated. If you want an area that has a few things going on it has to be Pantai Cenang.
