Hi Mustang,

Your stated route is quite common among backpackers. If you use lonely planet book, you will get a lot of tips for budget travel and cultural observations that locals may be unaware of.

Use hostelworld.com for recommendations and booking as well.

I have not stayed in any hostels in Malaysia but have read and checked out the locations of these places.

Most people travel northbound of Singapore will stop first in Melaka. Recommended place to stay is Sama Sama in Jonker Walk and Travelogue in Melaka Raya. Depending on preferences, some may stay more than 2 nights in Melaka, some may not.

You can read travel blog for other places in Malaysia as well.

In KL, you can stay in Equator Hostel, Grrenhut Lodge or Pondok Lodge. KL is ok to stay for few nights up to a week if you just want to party and eat.

In Cameron Highland (choose TANAH RATA in hostelworld), you can stay one or two nights to relax and retreat from the heat.

Elephant Sanctuary is in Pahang state on the east coast. I have not been there, so I can%26#39;t comment on that.

I would recommend Perhentian Kecil Island over Redang as most backpackers have liked it. It is more rustic and has a beach party every night on Long Beach.

Kota Bahru is the capital of Kelantan and the most muslim state in Malaysia. It has also the strongest Malay culture. Do not miss their colourful markets and also the wonderful Malay food. However, try to wear more decently (for women, wear T shirt instead of singlet, knee long pant instead of shorts). One night is enough.

From Kota Bahru, you can head to Penang or vice versa. Penang is famous for its hawker food, colonial style buildings and some beaches. You can stay few nights here.

Another popular place is Langkawi which is duty free island. Accommodation however is expensive. Hostelworld has only one entry. The web site below has the list of accommodation at the bottom of the page.

For a month in Malaysia, I would recommend also recommend spending some times either in Taman Negara in Pahang state or Borneo. Airasia.com has cheap flights to various parts of Malaysia.

Good luck!
