Safety in KK and at Shangri-La Rasa Ria

I am considering going to KK and Shangri-la Rasa Ria with my 12 year old son as a side trip from Singapore. The US and Australian state departments are warning against travel to eastern coastal Sabah, and in once case to all coastal areas of Sabah - due to terrorism and kidnappings. Does anyone have an informed perspective on the level of this risk? Thanks

Safety in KK and at Shangri-La Rasa Ria

I have been to Sabah 4 times in the last 4 years, most recently March this year.

The Australian advice has been, basically, unchanged in the last 5 years and I think they have dug themselves into a hole and can%26#39;t get out. The only change seems to have been that the warning has changed from pirates to terrorists, to suit the current political environment.

I saw some ';pirates'; in March but they were only a group of tourists at a fancy dress function.

All joking aside, The Sabah people are among the friendliest and most helpful I have ever met. I have made some very good friends while there. I have never fealt threatened in any way in Sabah. I feel safer there than I do in some parts of Australia and I suspect, than I would in some parts of the USA.

Go to Sabah and enjoy the wonderful people and country.

Safety in KK and at Shangri-La Rasa Ria

Overall, KK (and Malaysia) is a very very safe place from terrorist or pirates. Of coz there are reports of snatch theives (but which city dun hv tat?).. just be careful w ur belonging and dun b too flashy.

People are most friendly and most can speak English.

In KK, just stick to the main road and the crowd. Though u might be `scared%26#39; by the many `illegal immigrants%26#39; kids running around, dun b too alarmed.

Am sure U would hv a memorable %26amp; gr8 time in KK... and the Shang property--beauty!

Hv a gd trip.

We have just returned from Malaysia and stayed at the Rasa Ria for a few days. Whilst the resort is isolated, the service and activities on offer were excellent. We did not venture into KK, but everywhere we went we felt safe, and were well looked after.

I can thoroughly recommend this resort and especially the Orang Utan reserve.

Just got an email from the Australian Government about the travel advice to Sabah. In the past - when we went - the advice was ';Do not travel'; pretty heavy stuff. We went anyway and there were no problems.

Well., the email now reads ';Reconsider your need to travel'; as in, it has gone backwards and is safer again. As mentioned they have dug themselves in a bit and are only covering their you know whats.

My interpretation of this new advice is that there is no longer any threats, but the can%26#39;t say that so this is the next best thing....

It is probably less safe in LA than it is in Sabah an no doubt you don%26#39;t prevent yourselves from going outside or living life??

If you look at all the other travel advises for every other country in the world, according to the Gummit, it is not safe anywhere. :)

Hi Lalapc

The advisories are based on incidents that happened in 1999!! Not being able to keep up with what%26#39;s right and what isn%26#39;t has prevented them from doing their homework and updating these advisories to the detriment of tourism industries everywhere.

Thankfully, forums like Tripadvisor gives you access to the way things really are - and for Sabah, that means the real situation is safe.

Visible police presence in the city, water police around the harbours and island and navy and park rangers stationed on nearby and far flung islands have prevented repeat incidences ever since ensuring the safety of those, foreign and local, who travel to Sabah.

So come with peace of mind.

It is quite safe to walk around in Rasa Ria, and most of the people there (and in Sabah overall) are very friendly and quite helpful should you need any help at all.

And as for KK city, well, everywhere is quite safe as well, as long as you stay in brightly lit areas, and where there are a lot of people. Just don%26#39;t be so flashy in your jewelry and keep aware of pickpocketers and snatch thieves (which happens in just about any city really...)

Overall, there%26#39;s no need to be worried about the safety around Sabah! Hope you enjoy your trip here! :)

I won%26#39;t re-iterate all that has been said already, (I have covered this topic thoroughly in the past).

All I will say is that not visitng the West Coast even if there was a threat to the East (which realistically there isn%26#39;t) would be similar to not visiting me in Kent in the 70%26#39;s because of troubles in Northern Ireland. Obviously that would be illogical.
