I’m travelling to KL for my wedding anniversary, and I’m been offered a great rate at the Renaissance Hotel through work (a West Wing Room for $10 a night including breakfast).
As it’s my anniversary I have intended to spend up to $200 per night at a nice hotel, something like the Oriental, but because I’m getting such a good rate at the Renaissance Hotel I’m tempted a bit as it would mean we have more money to spend on other things.
I’ve read some very mixed reviews about this hotel; does anyone have any recent experiences they can share with me? I have researched the location and am happy with it so I really just want to know what the hotel is like.
For our honeymoon in Thailand we stayed at the Peninsula in Bangkok and Four Season in Chang Mai, so I want the hotel we stay at for our anniversary to match the same expectations or at lease come close.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Dr J
Renaissance Hotel???
My last stay at the Renaissance was about 9 months ago. It’s a good 5 star hotel, but it’s not as good as say the Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-la or Hilton. The current Renaissance comprises of two separate towers, the east wing and the west wing, it used to be two separate hotels, Renaissance and New World. The Renaissance wing is now called the west wing and the New World wing is now called the east wing. The Renaissance/West wing is by far the better (and more expensive) wing.
I’d give the Shangri-La an 8 out of 10 and the Mandarin Oriental and Hilton a 9 out of 10, whereas I’d give the Renaissance west wing an 7 out of 10.
However… if I could get it for $10 a night I would not hesitate to stay here !!!!
No, it’s not in the same league as the Peninsula BKK… but hey, you won’t find the Peninsula for $10 a night.
I would jump at the deal you’re being offered, and with the money you are saving on the room rates you could go for meals or spa sessions or drinks at the M.O %26amp; Hilton %26amp; Shang.
I don’t know if you know 5 star Bangkok Hotels like say The Intercontinental… well I would say Renaissance KL is a bit like them… a bog standard 5 star. Good, but not as “ott” luxurious as the Peninsula’s, Orientals, M.O’s.
Hilton, Shang and M.O are imo the best KL has to offer. The only other one I can think of that you might like is Carcosa Seri Negara. Small boutique hotel (used to be the British governor’s residence) but it’s not very central at all and although it’s quaint, I think it’s overpriced for what it is, and it’s location is lousy if you want to do a lot of sight-seeing.
Again though, for $10 a night... I%26#39;d jump at The Renaissance.
Renaissance Hotel???
Just in case you decide not to stay at Renaissance, can you transfer that offer to me? Just to have a hang at such cheap price at a 5 star hotel, lol ... :)
Sorry guy%26#39;s there was a typo on my original message, I%26#39;m been offered the room for £10 a night not $10 ... not quite as good an offer as I 1st thought.
I just did a quick check on the Marriott website… depending on dates, the starting price for Renaissance (west wing, standard room, exclusive of breakfasts, inclusive of taxes) is about RM340 per night. The price you’re being quoted is around RM70 a night. I would still jump at it ! Hilton, Mandarin Oriental or Shang are gonna knock you back around RM450 a night, starting price. I’d pay the RM70 for the Renaissance and pocket the difference of around RM380 a night and spend that on splurge dining at the other hotels.
Really, RM70 a night is an EXCELLENT price for this hotel.
I thought I got good corporate rates, but you have beat me hands down !
Yes, the Mandarin Oriental is a better (more %26#39;over the top%26#39; luxurious) hotel... but the prices are in no way comparable. If it was a question of RM400 for Renaissance or RM500 for MO, I would say fork out the extra RM100 for the MO. But since you%26#39;re getting the Renaissance for RM70 (inclusive of breakfasts!)... well if I was making the choice .... it would have been made in about 14 seconds flat.
RM70 won%26#39;t even get you two buffet breakfasts in any of the top 5 star hotels in KL... let alone room %26amp; breakfasts!
I%26#39;d be confirming that booking before they realise they%26#39;ve quoted you a silly price. lol
What relationship do you have with marriot to be offered such delicious deal? It%26#39;s like saying , we%26#39;re giving you free rooms, but just to satisfy the accountant, we%26#39;ll charge you a token.
It%26#39;s not there with the Peninsula, but it%26#39;s a decent 5 star hotel....
hehehe, I%26#39;m with Rio.... I%26#39;m searching around here for receipts from the Renaissance, but I can%26#39;t find any. I am almost 100% sure that the buffet breakfast was RM50 per person, exclusive of taxes (RM57.50 incl of taxes).
I really would bite the hand off that offered me these rates... and I would make sure they confirm it in writing, lol.
With corporate rates like this... my next question is...
any jobs going at your place Doc ?
I actually did some tax planning for a Tour Operator, because they were so pleased with my work (or the money I saved them) they offered me a free room.
I could take the room for free, but I would be subject to tax , so I calculated that if I pay them a excess costs of £10 it would be less than the tax I have to pay if I got the room for free.
Since it was a gift I didn%26#39;t think it was apporiate to ask for a better hotel.
I think I will take up this offer and use the savings to get a extra gift for our anniversary.
Thanks for the advice
Dr J
