Honeymoon: Bali or Langkawi??

Our wedding is in December 07, and we%26#39;re planning to spend new year%26#39;s in Kuala Lumpur. And we are stuck on deciding whether to choose Bali or Langkawi.

Which has better beaches?Nightlife?

Honeymoon: Bali or Langkawi??

I think that Bali has the best beaches and a better nightlife but I would still choose Langkawi. At Langkawi you can relax on the beach without a dozen hawkers coming up to you within the first 5 minutes trying to sell you something. Langkawi doesn%26#39;t have a whole lot of bars, which also means it doesn%26#39;t have loud groups of drunken people walking around. But it does have a good range of restaurants, which consitute a nightlife for me.

The other aspect to consider is the feeling of safety. Although Bali is making an effort to prevent further bomb attacks security is pretty lax in parts and there are underlying tensions between muslims and Balinese %26amp; between locals and hotel owners. Langkawi feels very safe in this way but also in the sense of not having a significant problem with theft, pick-pocketing and so on. Another point on safety is that roads in Bali are crazy but in Langkawi the traffic is light and easy to drive in.

The cultural aspect of Langkawi however is not as strong as Bali. In Bali, almost every restaurant plays Balinese music and there are temple offerings everywhere you go. In Langkawi you have to hunt for the traditional culture.

The poverty in Bali is also pretty apparent but not in Langkawi. I%26#39;m not suggesting it%26#39;s not there, but it%26#39;s certainly not as obvious. Bali has been completely spoilt by tourism and it%26#39;s become a lot harder for the locals to make money since the bombings. There%26#39;s a sense of desperation there that you don%26#39;t feel in Langkawi.

If you did go to Bali I would suggest Nusa dua which is a gated are with some lovely beaches. For a honey moon in Langkawi, I would recommend Casa del Mar (a junior suite if possible). It%26#39;s exquisite and you will have an unforgetable time. It%26#39;s also situated near some great restaurants, eg. right next door is the Beach Garden Restaurant. Food is good and the tables are on the sand.

Good luck.

Honeymoon: Bali or Langkawi??

Hi maramborhan

Congratulations on you forthcoming wedding

I have never been to langkawi, so I cant comment

but I have been to bali 5 times

and stayed at different parts of bali

I have been pre and post bali bombings

and still felt very safe there

If you dont want to get hassled which I found has changed a lot and the people dont hassle you as much as when i went in the ealier days

We stayed on a lovely island called lemonbogan island in the coconut beach resort (do a search have a look at this )

it was peaceful and lovely

there are also other resorts and villas with private pools

It you are on a budget Im sure its much cheaper to stay in Bali

and you could do a lot more for your money

The coconut beach resort rooms were round and very lovely with full view of the ocean and the horizon pool the only down side is there are a lot steps to climb it you are on top level of cliff

You could break up your holiday and stay in two different parts of bali as we did

we stayed at Kuta last time, which is the main drag so close to everything within walking distance and didnt hear anything once inside your resort and the other part we stayed on lemonbogan island (quiet and romantic time)

We also rode around the island on motorbikes and hardly saw any other motorbikes on the road

Another thing the only time I heard Balinese music was if we went to a themed restaurant that had it,or in your resort, other than that all the restaurants that i went to would have our own pop or rock music

If you stay in bali you can walk out of your resort and go for the cheaper massages in the littlesalons along the streets rather than pay the higher price in the resort ( that goes for meals as well)

and if you like shopping, well its at your finger tips wherever you go in bali

Definately heaps of nightlife in bali, soon as you walk out of your resort and you dont have to pay for taxi or bemo rides unless you are going out of kuta

my girlfriend is going to langkawi in june

because she wanted somewhere to go to do nothing

I hope this helps you make up your mind

I also think it would be great for you to go bali and help these people who have suffered and struggled these last few years

cheers julie

People have different opinions on Bali. I think Kuta is a version of hell and wouldn%26#39;t go there for a free holiday, let alone a honeymoon, but others love it. I tend to go to Ubud in the mountain area which is reknown for Balinese arts, crafts and culture (I don%26#39;t think I heard a lot of rock and pop music here).

I also agree that Langkawi is a place to go to and do nothing. This is my sort of holiday - lying around on the beach or beside the pool and eating local food in a variety of restaurants. It%26#39;s very peaceful.

Maramborhan, maybe you could give more info about what you and your partner like in a holiday?

maramborhan,

I think we could give you more feedback if you were more specific about your expectations.

Can tell you that Langkawi has almost zero nightlife ! If nightlife is a priority then you%26#39;d need to go to Bali.

If you want a relaxing easy pace kind of honeymoon, well, you can%26#39;t go far wrong on Langkawi.

As bayes says '; Very Peaceful ';.
