How far is Golden Sands from the Town

We%26#39;re traveling to Penang at the end of June and staying at the Golden Sands.

How far is it from George Town, night markets etc... How much are taxies likely to cost?

I don%26#39;t know why we decided to stay near the beach as neither of us really like the beach.

Thanks

Dr J

Taxi is difficult to say an exact price as it depends very much on

a) how good your bargaining skills are (as they never use meters in Penang) and

b) which part of Georgetown you%26#39;re going to.

I%26#39;d say apporximately RM25 for the part of Georgetown nearest to Batu Ferrenghi and RM30 to Komtar, more in the centre of town. You might have trouble getting these prices, but don%26#39;t pay *way* over these prices... RM32 for Komtar.. okay maybe if you can%26#39;t be bothered with the hassle of bargaining/arguing. Just don%26#39; let them rip you off too much. The prices I have stated are already vastly over inflated compared to what the meter rate would be.

Within Georgetown itsself be prepared to pay RM 10 for even the shortest of journeys (100 m or so) which shouldn%26#39;t actually cost more than RM2 or RM3. They have this thing in Penang where they just refuse to go anywhere, no matter how short, for less than RM10.

Good news is... Golden Sands has a shuttle bus that runs between their two Batu Ferrenghi hotels and their Georgetown hotel, Traders. It%26#39;s free of charge but only goes at set times... I think roughly (from BF to GT) at 10am, 2pm and 6pm and GT to BF at roughly 11am, 3pm and 7pm. Traders is in the heart of Georgetown, just next to Komtar, and it has a nice lobby lounge fi you have to hang around waiting for the bus back. You can book the bus with the little lady in the lobby of the Golden sands that does the taxi and limo transfers. Do book in advance as it%26#39;s often full when you leave it to the last minute.

You can also get the shuttle bus to drop you off at say Gurney Plaza (the bigg mall) or at (or near) the roundabout for Gurney Drive hawker stalls... but they only do this only the run from BF, not on the way back.

just to add what her from glasgow wrote, when we were staying in the E%26amp;O last year, it was 30 rm for a taxi fron the hotel to the strip in bf,

sorry, I only answered half your question...

distance... not sure really... 13 miles... 16... ??.... hehe, don%26#39;t know really.

It takes about 20-30 minutes by taxi from GT to BF... traffic is never really what I would call ';light';.

and it takes about 45 minutes from the airport to BF

Night market is right outside your hotel, in BF. There is a day market in GT, and an other night market more aimed at locals than tourists, but that%26#39;s in a different part of the island every night. You can get the details in the local paper or from the concierge.

Dearest Dai,

You really should take those leeks out of your ears before you start negotiations with the cabbies ;-)

by the way, I am learning welsh, complimets of Gavin %26amp; Stacey (bbc3). My insults in welsh are coming along a treat

:-)

gav %26amp;stac,thats how we all live in wales???/

We used to go to GerogeTown on the free shuttle bus.

For the return journey we just jumped in a cab, or take the afternoon shuttle return.

Cab fare is rather cheap.

Batu Ferrenghi does come alive in the evening with the night market.

Dai, lol yeah, just like everyone in Glasgow is a Rab C Nesbitt. Although I%26#39;m more a Mary Hen myself;-)

and i thought that glasgow was full of mary hens walking round, i am shattered

wat im from Taffy said is right. 30RM BF to town is minimum !
