Tanjung Aru Beach

Planning on staying at STAR - comments on TA indicate the beach at the resort is pretty much non-existent, but there is a longer stretch at Tanjung Aru beach just %26#39;around the corner / down the road%26#39;? Can someone shed some more light on this pls?

Also read there are hawker stalls and the like there - any details on what you can buy/eat here? How many stalls? And how far is it from STAR....

Thanks!

Tanjung Aru Beach

Hey SydneyMel,

Yup, the STAR only has a tiny little beach, maybe 50m across, but it has nice white sand and can probably accommodate everything but a long stroll at sunset.

The beach around the corner touches the far reaches of the property and there is no direct access (unless you climb over the low chain-link fence. This beach stretches all the way back down to the airport which is probably a good 3kms away (along the shoreline anyway).

A very local beach, so its quite lively. Unfortunately it a gathers a fair amount of rubbish and isn%26#39;t cleaned up as often as it should be, so it%26#39;s not exactly pristine. But for the long walk at sunset it will certainly serve th purpose. About 1.5kms or so down is a cluster of hawker stalls and you can find all sorts of local food here.

More upmarket is the Mediterranean Restaurant along side another al fresco type restaurant, the name of which I forget. There you can find western food and mediterranean, together with a decent selection of drinks and local snacks too. Probably a 15 to 20 minute stroll away from the hotel.

Hope that was helpful.

Tanjung Aru Beach

SydnelMEL,

The STAR beach is small as mentioned and the beach around the corner is a bit dirty - compared with the pure white sands at the STAR.

As for the hawker markets (food market) it is a nice stroll distance and an excellent feed. The place is a buzz with locals eating/selling and gathering. The food is supurb and cheap. Don%26#39;t be put off by the less than hygenic surrounds (outside the food area) all the stuff he food is gookedon is good the number of locals that eat is a good guide too. A part from breakfast - which is included in yur room tarif - eat all your meals out at the local markets.

A bit further away - nearer the airport on the left hand side as you are travelling to town are more stalls and shops, I recommend you go there as well - all sorts of stuff is sold and you can taje it back to the hoter\l, they don%26#39;t care....

Enjoy
