Restaurants in KL

I am coming to Kuala Lumpur in June and will be there for three nights, I have been recommended four restaurants to try whilst I am there but am trying to work out which of the four to go to. As I am there three nights I will try to go to three so want to drop one from my list.

The four restaurants are Frangipani, Third Floor, Tamarind Springs, and Bijan. Does anyone have any suggestions of which three to go to?

Thanks

Rob

Rob,

it%26#39;s a few years since we were in KL and we didn%26#39;t use any of your list .*This won%26#39;t help*

but I couldn%26#39;t imagine going to KL and NOT eating al fresco at one of the restaurants in Chinatown(Jalan Petaling)

Some of the best (and cheapest ) food anywhere.

Rob,

3rd Floor @ The Marriott and Tamarind Springs are very good.

Bijan I have never heard of, sorry.

And Frangipani rings a bell, but I can鈥檛 quite place it. It鈥檚 definitely not on my top 10 of KL restaurants list, although I must have been there as it sounds familiar.

A few you really should consider too, if you like top notch, are, Senses at the Hilton, Lafite at the Shangri-la and Cilantro at Mi Casa.

Add Tamarind Springs/Tamarind Garden and 3rd Floor to these three and you have 5 excellent restaurants to chose from, in 3 nights.

Tough choice. I really like them all. Possibly the two Tamarinds have the lesser food, but the surrounding make up for that.

And Harry鈥檚 point about a casual dinner at one of the hawkers stalls in Petaling Street or Jalan Alor, really is a tip worth taking too. Top notch nosh in posh surroundings we can get at home too (ok, at much dearer prices) but the hawkers stalls are a real not to be missed experience too, as well as scrumptious.

Hiya Harry, I am cyber-stalking you鈥?hehe

Sorry Rob.......Thistle and I (good grammar after a few glasses of wine!) met on the Bangkok forum and both seem to have a love of the Far East and helping others on these sites.

I%26#39;m off to BAEC Flyertalk now Where are you going Thistle???

Rob hope you enjoy KL,for a while it was our fave till we fully embraced BKK.

Harry

Hi RobM,

Francipani is in Changkat Bukit Bintang which is also called Little Europe that is a street down from Jalan Alor. This French restaurant is overpriced and not that good. The bar upstair serves various kind of cocktails, beer and wine but the cocktails aren%26#39;t that great either. Friday night is for ';alternative'; crowd, so you may find mostly local and western men there.

La Bouchan which is on the opposite side of the street at the corner has better value for money but it is not that classy.

Not sure about Third Floor in Marriot. Tamarind Spring which serves south east asian cuisine is great for its ambiance, food wise is rather pricey and unremarkable.

Bijan is a must if you want to try Malay food.

Why not try the revolving restaurant in Kl Tower for a great view and ambiance?

Thanks everybody for all your help.

I think I will go for Third Floor and Tamarind Springs and then have a look at the hawkers stalls in China Town.

Thanks

Rob

hi rob if you like your curries try the BOMBAY PALACE food is great

and the surroundings a old foriegn embassy makes a super night out

if you decide to stay at home the SHAPLA in solihull is also good

Straw bear Bombay Palace sounds like my sort of place. We are staying at The Traders. How would I find it?

Hi Rob74, I think you are getting confused..haha, KL is famous for food.

To answer your question directly.

Frangipani %26amp; Third Floor serve fusion east meets west kind of fare. Of the two, Third Floor is rated higher, Chef Ken of Third floor is sort of a celebrity here for fine dining and some of his dishes are unforgettable. Between the two, I will pick 3rd Floor.

Tamrind Springs is excellent for its atmosphere, very chic and romantic, and they serve thai / vietmanese fusion. Food is so-so, but the overall package and experience is good.

Bijan is malay. So your recommendations are not bad. It covers a range of food in Malaysia.

That being said, 3rd Floor is open for lunch but closed on Sundays. So you could try going to 3rd Floor for lunch and sneak in something else for dinner on the same night. I would try eating at Jalan Alor Hawker stalls. Even Chef Ken is rumoured to eat there after work.

HI Rob,

My turn to chip in!!!

Generally agree with most of the comments there apart from Bijan. The setting is fine but the food is not so remarkable. Menu items lack punch and flavour and will not have you craving for more.

For a nice Malaysian meal I would recommend going to Enak in Starhill. Whilst the setting is really nothing special at all, the food is amazing, full of flavour and takes Malaysian Cuisine back to it%26#39;s roots. Actually the whole of Star Hill - Feast Village have some great outlets.

Tamarind - beautiful setting - average food/service

Frangi - Very sleek and minimalist setting, never eaten there

KL tower - don%26#39;t do it!! The food is lame but the views are great
