tanjung rhu and restaurants

this is going to be our first visit to Langkawi. We have decided to book an all inclusive 4 day holiday, staying at tanjung rhu. We are interested to know what other good restaurants there are on the island. can anyone suggest a good room number at this resort? we are staying in a Bayu Surja room.

tanjung rhu and restaurants

Hi there

I stayed at Tanjung Rhu for 8 days over March/April, in a Bayu Senja room 406 (that is, block 4 room 6 which is on the third floor, there were two rooms per floor). The sea view was limited, but at least for the good reason that the vegetation is so lush! The next floor up would have looked over the top of the palm trees, so would perhaps have had a better view, but then again as there are no lifts you have to walk up more flights of stairs. So if you don%26#39;t mind the stairs (after all, you won%26#39;t be going up and down to your room that often), and want to look over vegetation rather than through it, I%26#39;d suggest a higher floor room.

Secondly, about the restaurants - we found the food around the hotel to be excellent, especially the Sands and the Rhu restaurants, plus the Reading Room for a yummy afternoon tea, and all the pool bars for lunchtime snacks. By the time you add in icecreams, mocktails, chocolates and drinks, I will be amazed if you make it out to other restaurants on the island! The all inclusive deal at Tanjung Rhu is definitely great value. The hassle factor of travelling to an outside restaurant may not seem worth it.... After all the Tanjung Rhu is fairly remote by Langkawi standards.

Any questions about the resort just email me.

Hi John,

thanks so much for your message. I really couldnt decide whther to book at tanjung or 4 seasons or Datai. I hope i havent made a mistake. What was the weather like when you were there? Do you think we ll be expecting rain in the coming weeks? what sights did you enjoy? I really need to know so much about the place........thanks

You definitely haven%26#39;t made a mistake! Tanjung Rhu was delightful and we rate it as one of the best holiday experiences we%26#39;ve ever had. There are more sophisticated and glitzy places in the world, but there%26#39;s a very special, relaxed feel to this place. None of the 3 places you mention are near the ';busy'; end of the island, so at each of them you would probably tend to stay in-house. The Four Seasons is just around the headland from TR, Personally I preferred the view from the TR as the bay is very picturesque. But friends who stayed at FS the week after we were at TR said it was excellent.

In our 8 days we had a couple of big rain sessions at evening time, as a tropical destination I guess you have to expect that. Otherwise it was hot and either sunny or slightly cloudy. Just beware of the paths through the centre of the resort if you%26#39;re rushing to a restaurant in the rain - I ended up falling into one of the deep pathside ';meditation pools'; which meant a ruined digital camera (and a lot of laughs for people in the Rhu restaurant who saw me!)

I%26#39;d definitely recommend the Cable Car so long as you go on a clear day - the view going up and at the top is stunning (or not, if it%26#39;s not clear).

The island night market is perhaps worth a short visit - but to be quite honest, if I only had 4 days at the Tanjung Rhu I wouldn%26#39;t move out of the place. Just eat, drink and swim/chill at the fantastic pools.

Mangrove tour is also excellent, we actually did it by walking out onto the beach at TR, then walking to the far right of the resort - you%26#39;ll find local beach access which has a range of small stalls and snackbars. Not only do you go around the mangrove system, bat cave, fish farm and other fascinating natural sights, but you then get to come back to the hotel around the outside of the island - quite a blast in the small boat!

A day trip to Pulau Payar (marine park) is great for snorkelling and even diving if you%26#39;re up for that. About 9am to 4pm. Plenty of fish including barracuda, pipefish, wrasse, parrotfish, small reef fish and small sharks.

Spa at the TR (my first experience!) was very relaxing and I will be having more of these in future!

Regards

John

I stayed at Tanjung Rhu in February 2007 for 10 nights. Whilst my wife prefers to have a beach holiday, I normally get itchy feet and want to explore! However, here, I had a job to drag myself away. You will not want to find another restaurant. The food and atmosphere are too good. I did go into town (not very special) and went up the cable car (it was a nice clear day) and went on the mangove trip. As to the latter, if you book a boat up yourself it is very much cheaper. We had a great time and we are already planning to go next February!

Why book all-inclusive, then ask about other restuarants in the vicinity. The reason they offer all-inclusive is that there is nothing in the immediate vicinity.

Tanjung Rhu is on the north east corner of Langkawi, you%26#39;ll share the beach with tourists and locals. Food wise you have made the correct decision, there is nowhere else to eat.

Have a wonderful time, its a brilliant resort.
