Don%26#39;t book any tours untill you arrive in Malaysia.

KL, Pangkor, Penang and Langkawi .... nice honeymoon.

It will be cheaper, you%26#39;ll have a better choice and its easy to do if you book once you arrive.

When we were in Malaysia, we didn%26#39;t book any tour. Basically we booked hotel car / van or take taxi. For longer distance we took bus. We asked hotel staff for the information of what bus route and bus number to take. I also checked prices so from the country I%26#39;m working in now (Vietnam), it%26#39;s better to take a tour from A-Z (booked in Vietnam) but it is a different story when you%26#39;re from NY. I agree with the previous person that it%26#39;s much better to book tours when you arrive in Malaysia. You also can consider to travel on your own in KL. Some people say we should be careful when using credit cards in Malaysia but I didn%26#39;t have a problem.

Easier route.....

Flying in to K L airport but staying in Penang. Can anyone advise on easier route? Also how far is Penang from Kuala lumpur? Thanks

Easier route.....

Penang KL 50mins by air (Boeing 737).. many flights per day. check out www.MalaysiaAirlines.com/my or budget airline is www.airasia.com

Easier route.....

The easier route is flying. I flied with Malaysia Airlines once.

  • Tranfers to Rasa Ria

We will be arriving early June and was wondering what the best option to get a transfer from the airport to Rasa Ria . We have 2 adults and 2 kids ages 5 and 8 with probabbly 3 luggages. Should we ask the resort to organise transfer or will it be easier to do it ourselves in the airport . Approximate of cost would be helpful. Thanks for any information.

    Tranfers to Rasa Ria

the KKIA airport to Rasa Ria will take you about 45 minutes and it would cost no lesser of RM80. Taxis are convenient to get at airport but since you are staying in Rasa Ria,... is better to contact them personnaly as you have kids travelling with you %26gt; SInce the distance is not near.. so you might need a more comfortable journey to your hotel

    Tranfers to Rasa Ria

I agree, the staff at the Rasa Ria will arrange a transfer for you with themselves at a reasonable price.

They use minibuses, so it will be perfect for you.

Are we talking about KL or Langkawi?

In Langkawi there is a Rasa chalet but not a Rasa Ria?

No Rasa Ria on Langkawi, nearest Rasa is Rasa Sayang (Penang).

  • Marine park

    Hi,

If anyone has any questions on the Abdul Rahman marine park please ask.

We visited all of the islands at least once.

Best island of all is Mamutik.

I did not rate Sapi much.

    Regards,

    Rick

    Marine park

Interesting as the books all say Sapi is the prettiest - we thought it lovely but intend to visit others this year. What makes Mamutik the best? We have two boys 10 + 11, who love to snorkel , where will we see the most spectacular fish? Which of the islands has the most idyllic beach - not busy!

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Marine park

We only visited Mamutik because we%26#39;d heard that the best snorkelling was there. That may be what rick means?

I can vouch for the range of fish I saw. The coral near the beaches is unfortunately trampled, but if you swim out a little further to the drop off you see a greater variety of coral and fish. I was in for an entire hour the first time and hadn%26#39;t even noticed the time pass!

hi, pls advise if I should attend a package tour or just go to the harbour to take the boat to Mamutik, then pay for the snorkeling/diving there. I plan to go there tomorrow afternoon. about 2:00pm, is the time enough?

i live in the pacific sutera harbour resort.

Hey katezeng - I was advised to go snorkelling in the morning as a wind seems to whip up in the afternoon.

This is true because the wind did come up and my snorkel after lunch wasn%26#39;t as good - the water wasn%26#39;t as clear - as the ones I%26#39;d done before lunch.

We left the marina (we also stayed at Pacific Sutera) at about 9am and because my husband went diving while I snorkelled on the island - we got back at about 3:30pm. A long day but I never had time to get bored.

You probably wouldn%26#39;t stay on the island that long for just snorkelling.

Lunch was included in this deal and cost RM65 - otherwise it%26#39;s ony RM40. I had my own snorkelling gear - so not sure how much extra.

    hi Ivory,

where did you get that cheap deal? i only found RM140 at the Pacific lobby.

I went direct to Borneo Divers - they have one of those little kiosks on that walkway between the Pacific and the Magellan. They also provide towels on the day you go out to the islands.

There%26#39;s also the big SeaQuest place on the marina (sort of behind the pool area of Pacific).

I found that the pacific charged ALOT of money for EVERYTHING! Especially the concierge called Henry - don%26#39;t use him if you can help it!

hi ivory, thanks! yes I saw some small house on the way btwn Pacific %26amp; Megallen. so which island do you suggest? we had a five year old boy and he cannot swim well, I%26#39;m also not good at swimming. and what do we have to rent?

Not sure if this is too late Kate - but you need to rent snorkelling gear if you want it. I saw people who couldn%26#39;t swim wearing life jackets to help keep them afloat and then looking under the water with their snorkels. This was all at Mamutik.

Lots of fish to see even near the shore.

    Hi there travellers!

We are going to KK in two weeks time and CANNOT wait! We have a 5 yr old son. He can swim reasonably well, so are hoping to take him snorkelling for the first time!

we plan to do this on more than one occasion whilst in KK. Mamutik sounds like the best one for snorkelling, but are any of the others worth a visit?

    Thank you kindly.

    Penang and medication....

    Hi

This is the first time i%26#39;ll be staying in Penang for one month in Feb 2008 and am concerned about how much of my medication I may have to buy there. Can anyone advise me if prescription medications are readily available over the counter please and are they reasonably priced ? We normally stay in India and this is not a problem so I know how much to take with me. Also are the health facilities cheaper there: i.e the cost of medical check ups etc....

    Thank you.

    Penang and medication....

What kind of medication do you require ? Generally speaking most medications are available over the counter in malaysia, but less than is available in India.

You will not have any problems in Penang, the healthcare facilities are excellent. Prescribed medication in Penang is not as cheap as it is in India, however it is far cheaper than you will pay in the UK.

    Penang and medication....

    Hi there everybody,

As AlbertsCat said, it depends on what kind of medication you wish to buy.. and also where you go to i.e. ';friendliness'; of the pharmacy. Nobody wants to break the law; know what I mean.. :)

Stay off tranquilisers and sleeping tablets and you should be able to get what you want. Send me a private message and I%26#39;ll tell you more.

One of the local private hospitals do executive screenings at these three package prices: RM550, RM650 and RM880 depending on what kind of tests you wish. The highest price package include a stress ECG test with consultation with a cardiologist. I just went for one couple of weeks ago and can highly recommend that hospital. Alternatively, one can just pop into one of the private labs and order whatever blood tests you fancy to check yourself; usually they have a staff (non-medical) to advise you what you require and whether you should see a doctor.

    Have a healthy holiday!

Thank you alberts cat and Gasman for your information. Will definitely check them out as I will be staying a month in Malaysia and as I said, when I%26#39;m in India for that length of time it is never a problem. This is my first time to Malaysia.

    Cheers

    shangri-la tanjung aru renovations

I am staying here in September and would like to know whether the ongoing renovations at the hotel cause any disruption to anyones holiday, i received a letter from trailfinders to say that there is building work being done to a new spa on a separate island with walkway ( is this close to hotel and does it affect veiws?) the Kinabulu is also still being renovated so am i better to stay at the Tanjung wing? The work is going to continue till end of September.

    shangri-la tanjung aru renovations

Go back one page to 1 June and you will find a posting that will answer some of your questions.

    shangri-la tanjung aru renovations

I just returned from the Shangri-La, and we had a room in the Kinabalu wing. The renovation was in no way a problem. They are renovating one portion of the Kinabalu wing as well as the spa. (If your room is in the K wing, you simply have to walk a few extra steps, and use an ugly stairway, to skirt the construction. This was not a big deal, IMHO.) The renovation of the spa also did not bother us. I suppose it affects the view, but only in that one spot! There is still plenty of beautiful coastline, we saw gorgeous sunsets every night, and we barely noticed any construction noise. I%26#39;d say that the only down side to the renovation is that the fabulous Pulau Bayu restaurant is temporarily closed -- but we had excellent meals every night at in the other hotel restaurants.

    Weather Update

Could someone give me a weather update for kota kinabalu please?

    Only 5 days to go!

    Weather Update

(Just returned from KK.) It rains in town every day. We stayed at the Shangri-la Tanjung Aru--where it did not rain--and could watch the rain drench the town every afternoon. In Sukau, it rained each afternoon for just a short while.

Building Works at Kinabalu Wing (Shangri-La Tanjung Aru)

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has stayed at the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru (spefically in the Kinabalu Wing) recently? My husband and I are staying in a Kinabalu deluxe room 3rd week in June and would like to know whether we should stay in the Tanjung wing instead. I%26#39;ve been told by the hotel the building works are due to finish on 30 June (bit late for us). It%26#39;s hard to get a definite indication from the hotel as to how disruptive the works are but would like to know if it%26#39;s worth changing wings now before we go. Answers would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Building Works at Kinabalu Wing (Shangri-La Tanjung Aru)

General reply from the hotel is that it would cause minimal disruption. However, there is definitely noise during the day that can be heard. I do not think it is enough to ruin a holiday by any means, but noise is noise. At this late stage of renovation the majority of the major work is finished and is therefore more limited in its volume levels. It is a great wing to stay in and the sunset views from the sea facing rooms are fantastic and not to be missed. Longer walk to the pool area and lobby area but some people prefer this.

The Tanjung Wing is also a fantastic place to stay and is nearer the pool and lobby area walking wise, so is down to personal choice I guess. If you chose this wing, then I would not suggest a room overlooking the pool area as this can be noisy during the day.

Either way, I do not think that there is enough disruption to ruin a stay by any means. I also stayed at the hotel during the Tanjung Wing renovations and did not experience any major problems then either. I guess it is down to personal choice and you have to be happy with this choice, as worrying about it before hand is not a good way to prepare for your holiday. Personally I would choose the Tanjung Wing as I prefer the style and location of the rooms and walking past the garden area in the middle of the wings every day is a great place to relax. I have stayed in both wings and this is only a personal choice and not a reflection on the Kinabalu Wing in any way as I also loved that wing.

I hope you enjoy your stay, it is a fantastic place to visit!

Building Works at Kinabalu Wing (Shangri-La Tanjung Aru)

We were upgraded to a suite in December and scored a room RIGHT NEXT TO THE RENOVATIONS. I mean the last room in the hall.

Anyway - all we heard was the occasional bang of a hammer and nail gun and some powertools. HOWEVER, these didn%26#39;t start until after 0930 and stopped at about 4-430. We wereout all days so it never bothered us....

If you intend to stay in your room all day, then yes, you will hear some noise - like mentioned above - nothing to cause ringing in your ears or stop a nap in the fternoon.

When you arrive you will probably be offered an upgrade anyway so it may never be a problem for you. If, for whatever reason you score a room and are not happy with the noise, speak to mamnagement and they will bend over backwards to help out (different room)

    Don%26#39;t let it concern you.

    Hi

We stayed in the Kinabalu wing on Wednesday night 30th May and yes there is working going on It starts at 10 and finishs around 5 each day. I is noisy diamond saws going and banging etc but we did not find it TOO bad . I would suggest that you request a room at the far end as they are working on the block in the middle.

I suggest you take the up-grade to the Horizon club well worth it.

Just returned from a stay in the Kinabalu wing-- our room was half way down the hall, and we never noticed the noise. I thought they did a great job to ';minimize disruptions';.

  • Pulau Tiga

I am going to Borneo in a week or so. Sounds like it will be great!! Am thinking of going to Pulau Tiga for the sights although it is a bit out of mur budget. Is there a cheaper way to get to Kuala Penyu from KK other than the $120 MY which the tour companies charge?

What sort of experience did you have on Pualu Tiga-just wondering if it is a bit sensationalised from Survivor!?

    Pulau Tiga

    Hi Satayforever,

I think it will be a good experience nevertheless - but don%26#39;t go because it was a Survivor island. Go for the coral, the MUD VULCANO, diving, snake island or any of the other things that make it great.

You can probably take a public bus, or a mini taxi (perhaps a series of) to get there - I%26#39;m not convinced there are regular scheduled though, which will work out oodles cheaper than the convenience of a tour company transfer.

Will keep my ears open for anything more helpful.

    Pulau Tiga

Thanks Eastofwest. Looking forward to good food, interesting experiences, good snorkelling-hope the weather is OK. Wish we had a few more weeks to see everything in Borneo but 2 is all we have.

    Tatoo

Well I%26#39;m the %26#39;Young Traveller%26#39; and I am thinking of getting a Tatoo soon. I%26#39;ll be in Malaysia for two weeks in July and was thinking if i should get one there. I%26#39;ll be in Lankawi and Kuala Lumpur.

Can ayone tell me if this is an idea or a very bad one. Needles? Clean?

    Tatoo

    Hi ';Young'; traveller,

Tattoo is cool but make sure you choose something you won%26#39;t regret, haha. Also, if you are going to have something in your arm, make sure you have a toned body as it looks awful on flabby one, :-P

Sungei Wang Plaza in Bukit Bintang has the most shops for the hip and trendy. It is like MBK in Bangkok where you can get all kind of cool fashion in small shops.

By the way, if you are going to pick chinese characters, make sure the person knows them well. In the UK, some guys were reported to get chinese tattoo with wrong translation or a prank. One guy got his tattoo as ';at the end of the day, I am an ugly man'; in four character chinese (you know how concise chinese can be).

You can also ask about how they handle needles to determine if it is clean. Sorry, I have never done any tattooing before, I prefer to be a natural self, lol.

    Sabah to Sarawak

I see from other posts that there seems to be extra immigration and forms for travel between SAbah and Sarawak. Does anyone know if they are strict about food being brought from KK to Kuching airports? Just ordinary things like bread and jam from travelling Borneo.

    Sabah to Sarawak

food not problem.. just no live animals/fish..

Anyway, u can get cheap food here so just get to oevr-packed w food.. happy trip

    Apartments in Langkawi

Could anyone recommend an affordable apartment for about five weeks in Langkawi starting on 10th June 2007? We are two adults and a baby and do not need much space but cooking facilities and a fridge are necessary. I haven%26#39;t found any hotels with cooking facilities.

    Apartments in Langkawi

That%26#39;s within 6 days! Do you have a budget?

    Apartments in Langkawi

    pkh 07,

Did you manage to find something suitable at such short notice ?

    AlbertsCat,

Yes I did, they have a house in P. Tengah pick them up from the airport this afternoon!

    kind regards Margie

Well done Margie, thought it might have been to short notice.

    Malaysian Airlines

Flew Malaysian (my third trip) from KL to Colombo. Service absolutely lousy, food horrible. Ok we dont expect gourmet food on an economy seat but something palatable. A bun with chickpea paste and chicken no butter is something else as a snack! and breakfast was a choice of scrambled eggs with a steamed sausage and fried rice. Chose the eggs amd it was horrible. The fried rice was marginally better. The lunch menu sounded good but what was offered was totally different from the menu. Never again.

    Malaysian Airlines

Fly KLM, Lufthansas or SAS, and you would be very happy with MAS food. Serious, I once found a dead fly in my ';salad';. Thing is, food is all prepared like a couple of hours before the flight and the girls just leave the food in the warmers before serving. Not very fresh, and if I were you, I wouldn%26#39;t choose some egg or fish or seafood on board. Chicken gets hard and dry, no pork or beef allowed on certain MAS flights because of religion matters. Not much left to eat then.

    Malaysian Airlines

Hahah Global traveller, that is so true... probably mysvar can share how%26#39;s Sri Lankan Air is faring in this respect...

I once flew KLM, I thought I was going to die of claustrophobia. It%26#39;s not their food though, i am not that fussy with airline food, scientific study shows our tastebuds are numbed by 30% when we%26#39;re flying...it%26#39;s their seats...now I can%26#39;t understand, Dutch people are the tallest people in the world, and yet their national airline%26#39;s seat pitch as well as its width is so cramped, I just can%26#39;t move a bit when the front row lower his seat just one bit. It%26#39;s an ordeal....

As for MAS, I%26#39;m surprised no butter was given with a bun....I never had any problem with MAS airline food , they must have prepared some nice satays? Do they still do that?

RioJ, I guess that the Dutch and most Europeans other than the French take little pride in what is going into their mouths. It more survival, not indulgence. Unfortunately, KLM has to pay so much airport taxes to their government; and people wanna fly cheap, only thing to do is to increase seats, reduce staff and reduce food. They are not as generous as JAL or SIA in terms of food and space. Surprisingly though, most European/American passengers NEVER ever complain about food, its always the lack of wine and beer. If you are on a Sri Lankan or India flight, well, good luck, eat less, drink less so you won%26#39;t have to use the toilet so often. Think about the details yourself. Mysvar, in case you ever fly Sri Lanka, do drop by again here, and tell us abit about the toilets.

I am not sure about the buttered bun, but I can only so far guess. MAS always try to change the menu according to the origin/destination. If they were flying Heathrow - KL, you%26#39;ll find roast beef or curry (the English LOVE curry), but never petai or belacan. If its Alor Setar - KL, you%26#39;ll most probably find nasi lemak, ayam masak merah, but never a cheese platter. In the case of Colombo or Delhi or Mumbai, curry and chick peas are on the main menu, no beef of course. Either the cook assumed that most south Indians and Sri Lankans did not like butter, or the gal forgot. Next time, ask the stewardess serving you for some butter, they always have basic stuff like sugar, salt and butter on stock. Unfortunately satay in only for the BC and FC people, but honestly, not worth paying thousands of ringgits for satay on the plane, stick to Kajang satay.

Don%26#39;t they have a MacDonalds at Colombo airport ? Tip - Always take your own food when flying cattle class!

I have never seen MAS serve roast beef on any flight into or out of LHR. Fish or chicken all the time, once they gave us a bit (tiny) of rubbery steak ! It was truely rubbery !

A lot of peole don%26#39;t eat beef , so they figure fish and chicken is the safety choice. Fly Business Class if you want roast beef.

I really love it when people stick their head over the parapet and complain. They usually show up their own ignorance.

Butter on a bun is basically a fatty lubricant to help the bun go down.. A chick pea spread would have a lot of oil in it so adding fatty butter to an oil based spread would be... well... stoopid.

Chick pea and chicken? Sounds really interesting. Was it plain chicken or sate? I might try it myself

I have been flying for 40 years and can vouch for a clear and significant improvement in airline food. It is not ideal but I look forward to it as a bit of a ';high spot'; in an otherwise long and boring journey. I am rarely disappointed.

The food on MAS Lon - KL was fine. Not gourmet but as good as any other and interesting. It gave us tourists an intro to Malaysian food. My only complaint was that they were obviously careful about wastage (big surprise?) and halfway through the service they ran out of choices. Maybe they should sack their expensive food consultants and figure out that tourists from London will all go for the curry!

I do fly first class, but definately not with MAS. You need to try BA or Singapore Airlines ....... then you%26#39;ll see why !

My personal preference is Singapore Airlines. MAS can%26#39;t touch them in any class.

  • Sheraton, Westin or Casa Del Mar for honeymoon

    Hi.

Thanks for all your help with my other posts. Now Im down to these three choices for my honeymoon. In principle I would get the Sea facing room in Casa Del Mar and if I was staying in the other hotels, the 600 ringit or abotu rooms in Sheraton or Westin.

    Which one should I book?

Sheraton, Westin or Casa Del Mar for honeymoon

Also, I will be renting a car. How easy will it be to go out to eat in a different restauraunt every evening from each of these hotels

Sheraton, Westin or Casa Del Mar for honeymoon

I would say if you want to be able to get out and about and eat out easily your best bet would be the Casa Del Mar, lots of restaurants within walking distance, and very easy to hire a car.

    Hi Dawood83

Which hotel do YOU think you should book?

Eventually it will hinge on what you think, so best to go with your own instincts rather than relying totally on what other people%26#39;s expectations are.

    Lesley

My instincts have narrowed ths choiue down to three hotels. This is the silliest response I have seen%26gt; I have never been to Langwaki therefore Im asking from people who have. What else is the point of this forum?

    Hi dawood83,

As you have not been to Langkawi, may I share these following little thoughts to assist in your dinal decision.

And for your benefit, I have stayed in all three in countless holidaying in Langkawi.

I will in order of preference choose

    1.Casa del Mar

    2. Sheraton Langkawi Beach;

    3. Westin-though Westin is actually a revamped of previous Sheraton Perdana, so room wise, quality of furnishings, competency level of service personnel-these which make an impact on one%26#39;s quality of staying experience-I am not in a position to comment, but will take it from its locality perspective.

Starting from #3- locality-it is a grand hotel, if one wants to be in close proximity to Kuah town and the jetty. It is THE hotel in Kuah town. Not much of a shoreline.

As for #2, depending on your room location, getting to main lobby, requires a buggy. I personally like an F%26amp;B outlet close to green foliage and perched on a cliff. Rooms furnishings are mediocre- abit tired already during my stay. Pool size-unattractive,and walkway to pool-poorly maintained. Beach is slightly coarse and not well maintained (';lawned';).

One is closer to Cable Car, Telaga Harbour, and also Oriental Village. (Telaga Waterfall is closed).

Casa Del Mar- a gem in the likes of a boutique hotel where attention to details are heed in amenities, furnishings, and competency level of service personnel, along the happening place of Langkawi- Pantai Cenang, where car rental, motorcycles rental, island hopping boat trips, marine park arrangements can all be done with ease of convenience, and many eateries of different cuisines are here, upto Pantai Tengah.

Your inert instincts after searching in TA forums, Casa del Mar and those respective websites, have may you inclined towards Casa del Mar. Though very Spanish in name to reflect its architecture, you may feel at home if opportunity arises for you to interact with one of its key personnel.

Pelangi seems a bit more expensive than Casa Del Mar so didnt look into it any further

I loved Casa del Mar and think it would be a lovely place for a honeymoon. It is small and the attention to detail is magnificent. I felt very pampered there.

Having said that, I have no idea about Sheraton, Westin or Pelangi (yet) so I%26#39;m not really in a position to compare.

I got married at the Casa del Mar last year on the beach and we spent art of our honeymoon there. Amazing place and the attention to detail is exceptional. Would recommend it hands down, so much so we are back in ten days for our 1st anniversary.

Just had 11 nights at Casa del Mar - it was wonderful. The previous reports are correct about the level of service. The management and staff are so friendly and will really look after you. The evenings are so romantic and it is lovely to dine on the beach under the stars. Also, you have the choice to walk along the road and dine at lots of other restaurants. Wherever you choose, enjoy your honeymoon.

  • Hiring a driver for 1 day in Langkawi

We%26#39;ll be in Langkawi for 10 hours next month during a port visit on the Superstar Gemini. We would like to hire a driver to go round the island, including a ride on the cable car, a waterfall and general sightseeing and some shopping time at Langkawi Fair Shopping Centre.

Any ideas on how much we should expect to pay for a driver for the day? Should I try and organise someone in advance, or will there be plenty of drivers available at the port? Thanks.

Hiring a driver for 1 day in Langkawi

The usual price to hire a taxi is 180RM for six hours. This will include shopping sightseeing etc.

There will be drivers at Port Malai Star Cruise Jetty waiting for the ship to arrive. The drivers obviously know all the favorite places, so your planning can be minimal.

Its usually a good idea to do the Cable Car early in the day, it can become quite hazy as the day goes on.

Hiring a driver for 1 day in Langkawi

Thanks AlbertsCat, thats very helpful. Gives us an idea of prices, we%26#39;ll definitely avoid the expensive ship excursions here, would much rather get our own taxi driver. Will be sure and do cable car first thing.

Can%26#39;t remember the exact time the ship docks, usually around 10 am. Ask the driver to go to Oriental Village via Pantai Cenang, you get the Cable Car here. After that take the north road along to Tanjung Rhu, take a few snaps on the public end of the beach.

After this he will head towards Kuah (main own) you can stop at Galeria Perdana, then its down into Kuah for shopping, get him to take you to Langkawi Fair plus the little shops around Maybank area of Kuah. While your in the area you might want to check out Langkawi Yacht Club for lunch. He will take you to other places along the way, but do keep moving time is short and there is quite a lot to fit into 6 hrs. You could also have dinner at Pantai Cenang before going onboard the ship, its only 5/10mins back to the port from here.

    Have a wonderful cruise.

Sorry, should have said after Langkawi Fair get the driver to drop you off at Jetty Point, you can then walk over to Eagle Square. Thats where the giant eagle statue is that you see in all the photo%26#39;s. Most people head for this place for a snapshot, it kind of proves you have been to Brown Eagle Island (Palau Langkawi).

    Hi

How many people can fit into a taxi or hire car? When we get to Langkawi there will be five of us, two adults and three teenagers. Would we need two hire cars?

    Deb

If you want to I can give you the phone number of a friendly driver who speaks enghlish and have a comfortable car.

He knows all the interested places and can bring you to nice restaurants.

There is a new shopping center in Kuah its called the Parade this is very nice. Have fun on your trip and don%26#39;t hesitate to ask me information about Langkawi.

Greetings from this tropical rainforest islan

He knows all the interested places and can bring you to nice restaurants.

There is a new shopping center in Kuah its called the Parade this is very nice. Have fun on your trip and don%26#39;t hesitate to ask me information about Langkawi.

Greetings from this tropical rainforest islan

    Margie

Vast majority of taxi on Langkawi are minibus, they will hold up to 9/10 adults. So don%26#39;t worry, you will all get in without any problems.

In Langkawi all the drivers know each other, they will make sure you get a suitable vehicle by calling one of the other drivers.

    langkawiover,

Where abouts is this place the Parade. I don%26#39;t remember this or any construction of this kind apart from the new landfill at the Padang Matsirat junction in Kuah.

    Hi Albertscat,

This new shopping mall ';parade'; is located next to Teow Soon Huat in Kuah.

You can also walk from Teow Soon Huat into this mall so you can really spend a long time in this building. there is also a cinema on the 5th floor (i think)

And about the taxis: well some cars are really old! And not all the drivers speak english that doesn%26#39;t matter when they bring you from A to B! When you make an islandtour I prefer that the driver can speak enghlish so that he can also tell you interesting things.

    Day trip from Singapore

Will be in Singapore in October for a week and will be able to spend a day in KL. Looking to fly to KL very early and back to Singapore in the evening. Will be using the express train to the city centre. Can anyone advise about the following.

    1. Will a visa or any other documentation (other than a passport) be required to fly from Singapore to KL.

    2. Is the express train to the city centre easy to find and use and how many stops. Is the city centre terminal near the sights or is another cab ride needed.

    3. Does anyone know of somewhere to freshen up/shower etc as I%26#39;ve been to KL before and remember how hot and humid it was, we won%26#39;t have a hotel booked to go back to and freshen up.

    4. Singapore Airlines have quoted S$304, are their any other airlines anyone can recommend

    Day trip from Singapore

What time is your arrival and departure from KLIA ?

    Day trip from Singapore

Which passport will you be travelling with ? This could be important regarding whether or not you will be issued with a visa on arrival.

    Whats your nationality ?

Sorry, I see you are in London, but that does not mean your travel will be on an EU Passport.

    Hi JTS-7,

Ans.1:- your screen shows location in London, which country%26#39;s Passport will you be holding.

Ans.2:- the express train, viz. KLIA Express is a direct (no-stop) rail service from KLIA airport (main terminal) to KL%26#39;s downtown hub in KL Sentral. There will be signs ';KLIA Express'; in the airport directing you to the counter to purchase the ticket. One way ticket is RM35.00.

Depending which sights you have in mind, e.g. Twin Towers, you can take the LRT to KLCC station, whereas for the KL Tower, exit the city centre terminal (KL Sentral) onto the main road and cross over for the monorail station to take you to Bukit Nanas monorail station, and KL Tower is about 10 minutes distant by walking.

If taking the LRT/monorail is not your cup of tea, then you will need to proceed to the taxi counter, and purchase a taxi coupon to reach these mentioned sights.

    3. there are shower facilities on Level 1 of KL Sentral. Suggest you bring your own towel and toiletries. There is a charge of RM5.00 imposed. Lockers facilities are also available on Level 1 and Level 2.

    4. At the moment only Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines ply the route between S%26#39;pore/KL.

Thank you for the advice. I am a UK passport holder and did stay in to KL a few years ago, I can%26#39;t remember having to get a visa for that trip, unless there has been a change?

    Hi JTS,

UK passport holders do not require a visa to enter Malaysia. It won%26#39;t change for foreseeable future as British is the biggest western tourist group to the country!

To answer your question about freshening up -

If you don%26#39;t mind spending a little bit, go to any hotel%26#39;s Fitness Center or Spa and ask to use their shower facilities. If you are going to KLCC, try the Mandarin Oriental. Not sure how much, but I suspect it will be in the region of RM50 for a day pass to use the gym and shower.

Travel from Port Dickson to Temerloh

    Dear all...

I am a new member of TripAdvisor and would really appreciate if someone could advise me which way/road to take if I am heading to Temerloh from Port Dickson.

One of my friend told me that I can take the road from Seremban - Kuala Pilah - Bahau - Temerloh, but it might take me 4 hours to drive there. Meanwhile, my boss advised me to take the Karak Highway, which is of a shorter distance than the other road.

I am planning to go there this weekend (alone). Really need someone to advise me which is the best way to go there, how long does it take for me to reach there, etc etc.

Travel from Port Dickson to Temerloh

    Hi cbremas,

Personally my advise would be to take the road as per suggested by your friend,ie via Seremban-KPilah-Bahau-Bera-Triang-Temerloh and the duration of travelling approx 3-4hrs subjected to heavy traffic especially at Bukit Putus, winding road which might be tricky during nighttime,so if you%26#39;re travelling alone and at night, the best bet will still be via Seremban-KL-Karak-Temerloh duration approx 3 hrs.

Don%26#39;t just take my word for it ( although i%26#39;ve travelled extensively thro the abovementioned roads....)get a second opinion!

    See ya!

    Day trip to Malacca

I%26#39;m thinking of taking a day trip to Malacca and another day to Genting Highlands by myself instead of joining a local tour. Is this possible, which type of transportation should I be looking at?

I%26#39;ve read so much about this restaurant called %26#39;Colliseum%26#39; on Jln Tun Adbdul Rahman. Which train will take me there?

    Day trip to Malacca

    Hi Castlebridge,

To get to Melaka, take the many hourly buses from Puduraya bus station. Metrobus and Transnational are two of the reliable buses. Fare is under RM10 per way with journey time between 2 to 2.5 hours and if during rush hours (7-9am, 5-8pm) and long weekend, the journey can be up to 3 hours.

Once you are at Melaka Sentral, go to tourist info desk for map of historic Melaka. Take green town bus no.17 to get to the Studhuys (Dutch Square with distinctive red houses) or take the Panorama Bus Tour from Melaka Sentral. The historic places of interests are along both side of the river.

    http://malacca.ws/maps/index.htm

There are many buses to Genting from KL sentral and Puduraya (buy from station counters, not outside touts). Journey time about 1.5hours.

    genting.com.my/en/eg/g_there/express_bus.htm

Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman can be accessed from LRT station between Medan Tunku and Chow Kit. Not sure where the Colliseum cafe is but this street is also famous for its night market for locals. This is however a seedy area where there are prostituition and pickpockets.

    Day trip to Malacca

    Hi castlebridge,

Yes it is possible to do it on your own provided you plan it well and know the bus schedule.

Here is a link to bus services to Malacca.

As for the Genting Highland, it is easy to do on your own as I used to do this myself. check this link.

    genting.com.my/en/…bus.htm

You could opt for the bus from Pudu Raya or take the Putra LRT to Gombak station.

Make sure you purchase your return ticket to KL and check the time for the skyway cable car to go down and the bus/LRT time leaving from Genting to KL.

As for the %26#39;Colliseum restaurant%26#39;, it is in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, there are few option to get there:

    1. You could take a taxi to the restaurant in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and it is located near a cinema and opposite Kamdar shopping complex.

    2. Take Putra LRT and get off at Masjid Jamek Station and walk up about 10 minutes to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

    3. Take Star and if I am not mistaken get off at Bandaraya Station and walk to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman after the Sogo Mall on your left about 10 - 15 minutes walk you will see the Cafe.

Here is a link to the Putra LRT and Star system.

We arrive at KL 13th July on route home to Aussie and have booked a weekend flight to Penang with Air Asia as a sidetrip. As the Air Asia limit is 15kgs, can we store our suitcases at the airport? Don%26#39;t think we will have enough time to take them to a hotel for storage. Will stay a night at Swiss Garden before leaving KL on 16th.

Don%26#39;t out any valuables in the luggage in case of luggage break in. I suppose this happens everywhere and KLIA is not spared.

    Sunset Beach Resort

I%26#39;ve booked the Sunset Beach Resort for 5 nights in July and I am now getting a little worried as the last review dates back to April and the ones before that even further.

Can anyone tell me more. Perhaps someone has stayed there recently and not written a review?

I looked at Pelangi Beach resort and decided not to stay there. Have I made the wrong decision?

    Sunset Beach Resort

Sunset is a nice place, beautiful garden peaceful and relax and everything closeby . Sunset 2 bungalow is lovely in Balinese style!

Have a nice time in Langkawi

    Sunset Beach Resort

It should not be much of a problem. If you are looking for peace and quite, this the place to be. Try sunset 1 rooms. Cost bit more but good. Sunset 2 rooms are ok but not all are well maintained ESPECIALLY ROOM 148 and sunset 3 are the smaller units. Don%26#39;t expect much from the breakfast as its simple and doesn%26#39;t have much variety. Evenings when its time for a good cold beer, just next door is Oasis. Good food and good cold beer.

    Francois,

Why should he have another look at the Pelangi? What will be different? Have you reduced the cost of your rooms??

I guess not and you should realise that your rooms are too expensive for a lot of people who use this board.

I believe that the OP of this topic asked specifically on the reviews of the Sunset Beach Resort. And hence an answer should be provided for this question. The OP did not ask for an alternative to the Sunset Beach Resort. If he/she did, then it would be appropriate for Mr. Francois to suggest his hotel namely the Pelangi Resort. Which I do not see as an alternative simply because the prices at Pelangi are approx 4x more expensive.

I have seen Mr. Francois fishing for customers from this forum one two many times only for my postings to be deleted by the management of TA. May I suggest to the readers of this forum to be very careful on certain reviews given by certain individuals.

And to answer the OP%26#39;s question, I have stayed at Sunset Beach Resort and it is indeed a very nice hotel to stay at. The location is also wonderful and a small walk to Cenang Beach. So you basically get the best of Cenang and Pantai Tengah beaches.

dear Edge, I am sorry but Sunset 2 are the better rooms as I advice to Young Traveller. He booked already and I just give him the advise so if he wants to he can ask for that one.

Young Traveller for sure you will enjoy your holiday! Have a great time in Langkawi! Ga ook eens langs Champor Cha mpor, nederlandse barkeeper en vaak gezellig zie net pas waar je vandaan komt!

I recently stayed at Sunset Beach Resort (end of May 2007) and I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ll be returning. Found cleanliness in the room rather suspect and the bathroom sink had a bad leak. Bed was old and breakfast very basic. The rates are reasonable but have to say, you get what you pay for.

    Hi,

The last post about the poor cleanliness of the room may worry the original poster.

Sunset Beach Resort is small and lovely. If occasionally the room you get is lousy or not cleaned properly, complain to the reception for a change of room or do immediate cleaning.

This is the case for staying in hotels. Sometimes even the best hotels may have poor cleanliness by occasional sloppy cleaners.

  • Half day tour

    Hello there,

Is it possible to go on a half day tour to the below locations:

    1) Taman Lagenda Langkawi (Legend Park)

    2) Mt Cincang cable car ride %26amp; 7 wells

    3) Gondwana Mountain

Are these places very far from each other?

    Thanks

    Half day tour

    Hi There,

R u staying at Langkawi or Penang or Kedah? Half day is too short, as you need to que for tickets, travelling, etc. Langkawi is not a big island, but the road is not as good as in SG. At Mt Cincang, you may want to take some pics, etc. Nothing much at 7 wells though.

    Half day tour

Well everybody has his favorite! Seven Wells is one of my favourite spots. I love the surrounding area you can also walk from there to halfway the cablecar, but you must have a good condition and a guide!

For half a day I should say go to seven wells it%26#39;s beautiful first go to the top where you find the sevenwells the legend say the angels are playing here in morningtime. I have never seen them!

Don%26#39;t forget to bring a bottle of water, you will need it!

Then halfway on your wayback you can go to the waterfall and have a dip!

After that go to Oriental Village where you can go with the cablecar

and will have spectaculair spots! At the end you also can see Thailand!

In Oriental Village you can do some shopping or go to Telaga Harbour park for coffee and pastries to the Loaf, the Japanese Bakery.

Legenda Park is in Kuah so thats totally the other way.

And Gondwana mountain isn;t on Langkawi!

There is a very good infrastructure on Langkawi the roads are safe and the new Highway from Kuah to the airport is almost finished

    Have a nice holiday!

    Langkawilover

I found the above 3 areas from this website:

    abcmalaysia.com/tour_malaysia/lgkwi_places4a鈥?/a>

As it was stated they are in Langkawi northwest area, hence I thought they could be a short distance from each other.

I am going to Penang for 21-22 Jun, then go to Langkawi on 22 night to 24. 23rd will be going to Pulau Payar and 24th will be doing some sight seeing.

I have booked a package which offers 3D2N stay at Holiday Villa and a half day tour, plus return airport transfers. I thought it%26#39;s a pretty good deal at RM370 per pax. The only thing is the half day tour doesn%26#39;t seem to be any good. I was given to choose from one of the below half-day tour:

    Option A

    ~ Langkawi Bird Paradise

    ~ Galeria Perdana

    ~ Mt.Cinchang Cable Car

    ~ Oriental Village

    ~ Telaga Harbour Park

    Option B

    ~ Underwater World

    ~ Mahsuri Memorial Park

    ~ Atma Alam Art Gallery

    ~ Gamat Factory

    ~ Eagle Square

I think in this case I will have to take Opion A as it goes to Mt Cincang but I am not too interested in all the other locations and the tour agency doesnt allow us to change.

Option A is an excellent choice as a trip on the cable car is something not to be missed. The views on the way up and from the top are stunning. The Oriental Village is a very pretty place although a bit touristy and there are quite a few good and cheap places to eat.

    Lesley

Option A is the better choice, takes you to both sides of the island.

If you are going to be in Kuah for shopping its easy enough just to walk over to Eagle Sq. Its right next to the jetty in Kuah.

Don%26#39;t know where that mountain is. Do you mean Gunung Raya ?

Kul to Bali with Air Asia?

Hi people im changing my schedule now for my holiday, at first was going to fly via Singapore airlines to Bali, then stopover in Singapore and take a coach to KUL. Now im thinking of London to KUL for 6 nights, then from KUL to Bali for 1 weeks and then from Bali to Singapore for 1 week.

The main flight from London to Kul and then Singapore to London will prob be with emirates airlines. But internal flights is what ive been looking at.

Air Asia is the cheapest airline flying to bali, well of course being low cost and all, but the price to Bali from KUL works out to be 拢37 which is such a bargin! The only problem is Luggage! We are coming from London and going for a 3 week holiday, so we are bound to have heavy baggage, in addition we will be coming from KUL so must have stocked up on some shopping!!

Has anyone flown the KUL to Bali route with Air asia? Or had any luggage problems etc? Any information will be great!

The next cheapest flight i found was with Singapore airlines from KUL to Den (via singapore) which works out 1 way at 拢122. Cheaper then Malaysia airlines, which was a suprise?

Im going to skip the idea of the coach journey from singapore to KUL. As i feel it would be nice to visit a city then go for a relaxing beach break in bali and then head to a city again, instead of goin gto bali and then doing the two cities at once. In addition we will be visiting each destination with out the need of going back to the destiantion to catch a returning flight etc, and therofre wasting any days!

    Thanks people!

Kul to Bali with Air Asia?

    Hi,

Air Asia allows only 15kgs of check in luggage. Hand baggage is at 6kgs. How are you flying from Bali to Singapore? If you get a cheaper ticket with SIA to Bali, then go for it as SIA allows 20kgs at least and is a great airlines than even Emirates cannot live up to.

Kul to Bali with Air Asia?

Hi many thanks for the reply

Well from Bali to Singapore i was thinking of Jet Star Asia, as they are offering great value for money! For example its costing 拢95 for flights with that airline. Otherwise its 拢135 with Singapore airlines!

What concerns me is that the low cost airlines wont let us bored as we will have so much shopping from KUL in out luggage lol It will be very heavy lol

    Hi ,

I knew Jetstar flies the Singapore and Bali route but they are usually as pricey as schedule airlines, :-)

Are the fares for reverse direction of Singapore - Bali - KL muhc higher for your travel period in the budget airlines? Otherwise KL as last leg may be better as shopping is generally cheaper than Singapore.

You won%26#39;t have problem boarding with your heavy luggage if you pay the excess baggage.

    Hi doopwoop,

As you know thats exactly what I have done and have flights booked from Kuala Lumpur to Bali and the Bali to Singapore via Jetstar. i would advise booking the Jetstar flights as soon as else thier prices do increase nearer the time.

I found that Qatar Airways also fly to Bali from Kuala Lumpur for a bargain price of about 拢100, and of course you wouldnt have any issues with luggage, but then your Singapore trip would be separate. Unless you can get flights from London that fly into Kuala Lumpur and return from Singapore?

I booked flights to Bali with Air Asia as I figured I would do most of my shopping in Bali and on the return flight with Jetstar I wouldnt have an issue as they allow 20kilos.

    HTH!

Check the Air Asia website for extra baggage charge, and estimate how much luggage you will be bringing, the arrive at the total cost.

Remember to add in airport tax also.

With that then you can compare against other airlines.

SQ allows 20kg, and if you do carry a lot, 20kg may not be enough too :-p

Thanks for all the information people!

Its all been a big help!

    Thanks!

Sorry Norma, but what or where is Raleigh ? Is it an event or a place ?

    Langkawi to Raleigh

Sorry I should have been more specific...... Ban Krabi Yai, thailand - Krabi Beach %26amp; Raleigh Beach

    ok !

From Langkawi take the boat from Kuah Jetty in Kuah to Satun. You can book a bus to Krabi from there. Or you can catch a bus from Hat Yai. Takes around 8 hrs to do the whole trip.

One way trip will cost approx 12 GBP

If you are going to be in Georgetown (Penang) you can get a bus all the way up to Krabi direct.

    Thanks a mill for that!

  • Need to choose between Thailand and Singapore/Malaysia?!?!?

    Hi,

I am planning a trip to Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore-Bali in August with my family.

However, I am worried that the time we have in hand might not be enough to visit all 3 places. We have 8-9 days.

So we %26#39;MAY%26#39; need to pick between Thailand / Malaysia %26amp; Singapore.

I need some advise on this.

We are looking at a relaxed holiday. Walk along the beach, going to the spa, maybe some golf, lounging around in some bar, some good food...along with the regular site seeing.

Pls advise which will be a better option.

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers!!

Need to choose between Thailand and Singapore/Malaysia?!?!?

HI, as one of your criteria in your selection amongst the three destinations, viz. ';walk along the beach'; (unquote), then drop Singapore, as it has no natural beach.

Then, as you have mentioned relax holiday with some golf-then we zoom in to Malaysia and Thailand.

Then in both these countries, where there is beach and golf-will be:-

Malaysia:- Langkawi - 3 golf courses

Thailand:- Phuket- around 5 golf courses, with the world famous-Blue Canyon.

Then we look at your preference of spa experience, then Phuket has more choices than in Langkawi, and food selections are better in Phuket.

However, Langkawi, will be more relaxed and nightlife is not so vibrant as in Phuket(though specifically in Patong).

As for value for money and service quality-Phuket notches better in respect of accommodation.

Need to choose between Thailand and Singapore/Malaysia?!?!?

Phuket fits your criteria. Singapore does not, neither does Malaysia.

Avoid using the Patong area as a base. Check out the website for The Chedi, its beautiful. Easy access to Patong, 40 mins to Phuket Town.

    Hi!

Thanks a lot for all the inputs. We are considering Singapore %26amp; Malaysia, mostly due to the fact that my sister may have some work coming up in Singapore.

What are the things one could do there? Also if anyone can help with hotels. Our budget is around $40-$50 per room per night. We are 4 adults, so we%26#39;ll need two rooms.

The age group are as follows:

    My Parents - 55yrs both

My sister and Me - 27 and 25 yrs

My parents will mostly be interested in site seeing and a bit of relaxing so maybe the spa or a game at the golf course. Where as my sister and I would like to experience the night life, shopping, some adventure sports etc...

Does any one have any sugestion?

    Thanks!!

    Cheers...

    Itinerary suggestion -

    Singapore - KL - Pangkor.

Your initial post seem to indicate a relaxing, yet maybe slightly glamorous holiday, based on the locations and activities.

However, I am not sure what level of accomdoation you are looking at.

$40-50 per night (I assume US dollars?) won%26#39;t get you very good rooms today. In Singapore it won%26#39;t get you anything other than 2-3 star hotels. Here, at US 50 per room, this translates to RM175, probably gets you a 3-4 star hotel at most.

Just something to keep in mind.

    AirAsia - reliability and seating

I%26#39;m in two minds whether to save money and fly AirAsia, or just go with MAS KL to Kota Kinabalu. My two main concerns are:

    i) making the connecting flight home (due to delays etc) KL-SYD

ii) unreserved seating when travelling with small children (ages 3 and 1.5)

Unreserved seating in oz has always been very civil and orderly - no stampedes when boarding as I%26#39;ve read (on TA forums) happens on AirAsia. Are families with children allowed to board first, as with all other airlines? I can%26#39;t imagine the kids being at all happy about sitting on their own.

Anyone who%26#39;s flown with AirAsia recently got any comments?

    AirAsia - reliability and seating

Hi, I fly from JB to Kota Kinabalu by AirAsia on this April. For the morning flight I took, it is very punctual. For the night flight I took to back to JB, I heard that due to the bad weather, the flight is delayed for 1 hour.

Don%26#39;t worry, AirAsia also allowed the familifes with children, elderly (age more than 60?) board first.

    AirAsia - reliability and seating

If you have small children, I would suggest you go MAS and have peace of mind. Air Asia do allow families with kids to board first but I found that upon walking along the tarmac to the aircraft, some people behind would have caught up with us and scramble to board. Thus you may not find yourselves seated as desired.

However from this month, Air Asia has another facility called Xpress Boarding in which you pay (I think) RM20 per seat to have assured seats of choice. Apparently, you book that as you make your reservation. I am not sure how that works (yet); so maybe you can tell us if you decide to book Air Asia.

    Cheers,

Never had any real problems with punctuality, but if you do a search on TA you%26#39;ll find that many have.

What I found off putting was the shear zest displayed by fellow passengers at boarding time ....... its crazy !

Queue .... no way ! Everyone wants to be the first to board

Take Gasman advice and make alternative arrangements, especially as your travelling with small children.

I travelled for the first time using Air Asia to Langkawi when my first child was 2 years old and pregnant with the second child 2 years ago. Even though families with young children and elderly members are supposed to board first, there isn%26#39;t enough time gap with other %26#39;able bodied%26#39; passengers that they are practically nipping at our heels making a mad dash for the plane that some of them managed to board the plane first. Plus I have heard stories of large families with lots of adult travelling with a lone toddler taking advantage of the priority boarding. Travel with MAS and have some piece of mind and save your breath from the mad dash!

We are in our late 30%26#39;s, and love the outdoors. We are considering to visit a popular zoo, maybe visit the Batu caves, or join the fireflies tour, and maybe visit places with historical relevance, and lastly a little bit of shopping. Do you think it%26#39;s possible to do all these in 4 days? What other places do you suggest we visit in KL?

By the way,we are also considering to spend a day in either Genting or Sunway Lagoon. In your opinion, which is worth considering?

Can you recommend a website that offers good deals on the hotels we mentioned?

    Thanks in advance.

    suggestions please

I think you can give the zoo a miss. If you like water park, then Sunway Lagoon aritificial beach and slides, else it%26#39;s mostly kiddy rides... Genting is in a Highlands, you can spend a night there and stay at the cheap First World Hotel, very small room though. It%26#39;s highland weather and some Casinos...

you can try www.hoteltravel.com , marimari.com for hotel bookings. Sometimes, certain hotels offer best rate on their website, not sure about those 2 u mentioned, worth trying.

    suggestions please

Thank you RioJ for your suggestions!

We are thinking of skipping Sunway Lagoon, but might consider a daytouror overnight in Genting.

What other places in KL should we consider ?

    Hi

I suggest that you check for prices on various website. Try asiatravel.com, planetholiday.com etc. I%26#39;ll send you a link to my KL trip report and maybe you can find some useful information there :-)

    Hi,

I would suggest a visit to the aquarium at Convention Centre near the KLCC, Petronas Twin Tower which offer free ticket but you will have to collect it very early in the morning as it is limited.

I have never been to a fireflies tour but my husband did, he told me it is something new to see but you will have to go on tour for this.

Here is a good link for you to read and check which places that you think might suitable for your trip. It has the infos you need on places, time and fees plus info on transportations.

    http://wikitravel.org/en/Kuala_Lumpur

Give Sunway Lagoon a miss. You have only 4 days so spend it wisely.

Fireflies is good. This type of firefly you can only see here and South America.

In my opinion, I think you should spend a day shopping, a day doing a city tour, a day in Batu Caves/Genting. You can squeeze in the fireflies in the evening of the shopping day.

    Rgds

Gard, thanks so much for the link you sent. It is very informative!

Peekaboo and Maic, thanks too! Will take your suggestion to join a tour for the fireflies, visit Batu caves and Genting, and see the Aquarium and of couse visit the Petronas Tower.

My husband and I are trying to avoid to go shopping, since it%26#39;s only me who is going to enjoy, hahaha....

Hi Guy's best place to stay on Redang?

can someone point us in the right direction and recommend a very good hotel for two adults mid 40%26#39;s, however, with own teeth, like lots of luxury, fun and adventure.

    Rgds

Hi Guy's best place to stay on Redang?

Hi Jaime and Suzanne, two notable good hotels on Redang island that I have stayed in are Berjaya Redang and Redang Laguna, and if budget is lower, Redang Tea Chalet is also good.

Check Berjaya Redang, as the last time, when I stayed with them, they offer a good accommodation package plus air package on Berjaya Air, which works out cheaper than booking separately.

Worthwhile to fly straight onto Redang island (flight duration:1hr 10mins-it is a small plane-Dash, departing from Subang Airport) as road journey is rather far,and need not worry about catching ferry transfer from Merang(which if you fly into Kuala Terengganu, you then need a taxi to Merang for the jump off point to Redang island).

Hi Guy's best place to stay on Redang?

We were in Redang in a group of 14 back in 2004 and stayed at the Coral Redang Resort. I believe it has a better ambience than the large concrete hotel that Berjaya is. Coral Redang offers both rooms and chalets detached/semi-d. We stayed at the semi-d chalets and they were great. Our group was a mix of Asians and Westerners and all agreed the food was great. Beach in front of Coral Redang is nicer and calmer as there is a small island directly in front.

The architecture of the chalets are typical Malay style. If you like large hotels then Berjaya is for you but Coral Redang is great for those wanting other than that. Flying from KL to Merang and catching the ferry to Redang is all part of experiencing the culture and savouring the views of the countryside and does not take that long. Go through an agency and you will be taken care of end to end but checkout more than one as prices do vary.

Checkout Redang at http://www.redang.org/ has lots of good info.

    cheers

    Hi Jamie and Suzanne,

I agree that Coral Redang is certainly better than Berjaya as the latter has rather insensitive management and poorly maintained rooms. (read the various complaints from TA especially during the water shortage crisis which was also reported in newspaper).

Berjaya has its own private beach and airport which is great if you are taking their flight package but you are cut out from the rest of the island hence the food option is limited to the resort.

Laguna is cheapest among the three but you will not enjoy much privacy as this resort is popular with large group of families and friends.

    had a great time at berjaya (beach not spa) last September, but would suggest you try to get a chalet near the beach rather than be in one of the hotel type rooms. ROom was lovely, but had to trek up and down many steps to get to the facilities. Not a real problem, bu t did mean there was no nipping back to get anything quickly - more scout motto%26#39;s and being prepared.;

lovely private beach and good trips provided.

    Hi Jamie %26amp; Suzanne,

For me, best place in Redang would be Coral Redang too. Laguna didn%26#39;t have the ambience of a relaxing holiday. I have written a review on Coral Redang %26amp; Laguna.

But if luxury %26amp; pampering is what you desire, you may have to forgo the azure waters of the islands and stay on the main land at the Tanjong Jara resort. It%26#39;s still a beach resort, minus the crystal blue sea.

However, if you want fun and adventure, I would suggest Club Med Cherating. Beach resort too. But the fun doesn%26#39;t include snorkeling like how you%26#39;ll experience snorkelling in Redang.

    Hi Jamie and Suzanne,

I agree that if you look for luxury, fun and adventure, you could try Club Med or Tanjung Jara.

Club Med has mixed reviews but Tanjung Jara is one of the best resort in east coast plus you have the option to move around such as a snorkelling trip to Pulau Tenggol and visit to local markets and villages.

If you are into island escapade, staying 3-4 nights in Coral Redang may do the job.

    Penang Bridge Run!

If you%26#39;re into marathons, there%26#39;s one coming up in Penang on 24 June 2007.

To all who have been, which hotel is best to stay? And with easy access (either via walking or shuttle bus provided) to the starting point of the race at 2am!!!

Is Cititel Penang good? Clean? Efficient service?

    Thanks in advance!

    Penang Bridge Run!

This is the Penang Bridge Run you are referring to? There are no hotels withing easy reach of the bridge. You will definitely need a taxi at that hour - I dread to think how much you will be charged! Citytel is a decent enough hotel although I have never stayed there. The one in Megamall PJ is small but clean and pleasant. I doubt if any hotels in Pg offer shuttle service for the Bridge run.

Hope you find your way ok.

    Penang Bridge Run!

    Hi There,

Had stayed at Cititel Penang before. Business class %26amp; clean. Near town. My friend is participating - I%26#39;ll ask him about the transport.

Why don%26#39;t you stay at Vistana Hotel, Bukit Jambul? Near to Pg Bridge and you can get your taxi to get you to the Pg Bridge.

Vistana Hotel, Bukit Jambul is about 10 mins from the Pg Bridge. Much easier than staying at Cititel in downtown Georgetown.

You should be staying around the Bayan Baru/Bukit Jambul area - 3 hotels come to mind - Vistana, The Equatorial, and the budget Hotel Seri Malaysia. All within 10 mins drive to the Pg Bridge.

malaria tablets-staying rasa ria --yes or no ??

We are off mid june to a week at the Shangri Las Rasa Ria in Borneo via Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. I%26#39;m now getting grief from my partner who has just had received a masta health brief advising we should take malarone as a precaution. I was of the opinion that because we are staying at a five star resort and will probably only venture out one day to Kota Kinabalu that the risk was very low as its not we%26#39;re like spending a week jungle treking. Malaria the report states is spread by mosquitoes that bite from dusk to dawn. Should i be concerned and is there a real risk?Question no.2 is is there any risk from contact with the orangutans?n ever since a had ';breakfast with the orangutan'; at the singapore zoo and she looked me in the eye before squeezing my leg as she blow me a kiss i%26#39;ve always fancied a trip to Borneo. My plans are probably to take in the 5 orangutans at the resort and not lose a day travelling to the santuary so is there any risks i should consider ??? the only precaution i had considered so far is no french kissing.

malaria tablets-staying rasa ria --yes or no ??

We%26#39;re from the UK and were advised to take Malaria tablets. On return v pleased we did as a friend%26#39;s mother caught malaria whilst in Borneo and she stayed at another 5 star hotel, although not sure where and whether she%26#39;d been treking. Also there weren%26#39;t really any mossi about but we did the night watch (briliant, highly recommend it) wher eyou sit in the jungle and watch for wildlife. There were tons of mossi%26#39;s about then so pleased we took the tablets. Think we paid about 拢60 each and same for my 9 year old daughter but was worth it for piece of mind!

When you see the o-tangs there are arround 8-10 metres away althoguh nothing stops then coming closer, they don%26#39;t. You aren%26#39;t allowed to talk or make any noise and you can watch them feed for as long as you like (30 mins ish). You do need to book for this and suggest you do when you first get there in case you want to go again later in your holiday. YOu can actually see the O-tangs if you go to the top floor of the jungle rooms and look over, we were ale to see them when they were about to be feed. Would have been better with binoculars though!

    Rah.

malaria tablets-staying rasa ria --yes or no ??

thanks for your reply rah,i%26#39;ve now reaccessed my trip on tues and have just purchased a supply of malarone--wasn%26#39;t going to bother but after reading your listing and the fact that if you are the one unlucky case it hampers you for life i decided it wasn%26#39;t worth the risk--nor the earhole treatment my partner was starting to prepair---manks thanks for your advice--eric

  • Malaysia here we come

Once again I am asking all you in Trip Advisor your honest advice. We are two couples who thought that we would try Malaysia in late Febuary or early March. The plan is to leave blight, stay 2/3 days in Kuala Lumpur and then 6/7 days in a really nice hotel, something like The Novel in Pucket or The Raddision in Goa, both were recommended by people of Trip Advisor.

The questions we would like some answers to are Weather, best part of Malaysia to go after KP where we can relax, good food and at least 4/5 star.

Please note that we are all 50 plus but can still drink nice wines and enjoy really good food.

Finally the golden sands in Pentang was recommended but I am not sure

    Malaysia here we come

    Jackboy ,

KL is one of my favorite cities in the far east, hotels that I have stayed in and are superb vale for money are : Mandarin Oriental, The Regent, and Traders (great value the club rooms and well worth paying the extra money , can highly recommend the park view club rooms great view of the twin towers)

Feb /March weather should be good for Pakor Laut Lovely place but a bit pricey,

Penang island is a bit of a tourist trap but the E%26amp;O Hotel George Town is a treasure of a hotel best rooms are any of the premier suites or if your feeling flush one of the writers suites, Langkawi a lovely island, and my first choice would be the Tanjung Rhu this hotel is SO nice cannot recommend it enough, the Datai is of course worth consideration but I prefer the Andaman its sister hotel .

All of these hotels are exceptional have good restaurants and are very suited to people in our age group(late 40鈥檚 and early 50鈥檚)

(Beware of the golden sands this hotel is in dire need of a refurb)

    Hope this helps

    Malaysia here we come

If you don%26#39;t want to stay at The Golden Sands in Batu you might like to consider the Park Royal further up the main road, costs a bit more but its worth it.

Langkawi, well years ago it was also a Raddison resort, its still one of the top resorts on the island.

Travelling in late feb/march you won%26#39;t have any weather worries, but do expect the occassional rain, it is the tropics after all.

As has been recommended, for KL the Mandarin Oriental is a superb choice, you%26#39;ll love the pool overlooking the park in KLCC.

Plus the best views of Petronas twin towers.

Wines can be quite pricey in Malaysia, good news is that Langkawi is duty free. There is a good selection available at all the resorts. The alternative is to visit some of the local suppliers and chose your favourites. They import them from all parts of the world, prices are often better than in the UK.

For luxury on Langkawi, consider the Datai, Andaman, Four Seasons and Tanjung Rhu Resort.

Sorry, meant to say that Tanjung Rhu Resort was a former Raddison.

  • Which hotel for one night in KUL before taking train to SIN?

We arrive in KUl on the 23rd July and will leave for Singapore the next day on the 24th at 10pm via train(havent booked it yet but intend to book first class tickets for the family). We need a hotel that will allow us to easily see a few sights and experience KUL before we leave for the train journey, we are returning to KUL later for a longer stay.

As we are a family including a 12 month old, I think we would also prefer a hotel that is close to the train station, yet also close to touristy places. I was considering the Hilton, but is that far from the %26#39;Golden Triangle%26#39;? Or doesn%26#39;t it matter which hotel we stay in and is it relatively easy to get to the train station at about 9pm?

Furthermore, can someone also advise of the best way to get to the hotel from the international airport, we are a family of 5.

(If anyone has recent experience of using the overnight train I would be interested to read your opinion)

    Many thanks.

Which hotel for one night in KUL before taking train to SIN?

If it%26#39;s only for a night, then the Hilton at Sentral where you can take the ERL to KLIA. You%26#39;re returning to KL after Singapore, so why the hurry to visit Golden Triangle in KL?

Which hotel for one night in KUL before taking train to SIN?

Thanks again for your help Rio. You are right, no rush to see Golden Triangle, but if we do stay at the Hilton, is there much to do nearby?

There is nothing much to see nearby the Hilton. However, the hotel does have a nice pool where you can hangout and has some excellent resturants. And its a very nice and comfortable hotel. If you wish to hang out and have a latte, then Bangsar is about 5-10mins by cab away, or you may wish to do shopping at a huge (but mid market) mall called Mid Valley, also about 5-10mins by cab.

The station is NOT near touristy places, so having a hotel near to the train station means it will not be near touristy places, and having a hotel near touristy places will mean it is not near the station.

However, KL Sentral more than makes up for having direct connection to KLIA Airport, and also next to the train station.

    Nevita,

We took the night express from KL/Butterworth returned, first class, it was not a smooth ride and the compartment is not overly spacious if u have big luggages.

Secondly, do recommend u carry an insect repellant, by the time the trip was completed I was bitten alive by mites or fleas nesting in their reddish blanket.

From Kul/Sin we took the morning train, bought some takeaway from the Railway station prior to boarding, found the buffet train selection limited and unappetising.

I will be travelling to KL and Pen soon, but am avoiding the trains and going by coach instead, quicker by a couple of hours.

    hope that helps.

    cheers,

    Jessie

A family of 5 will take up 2 compartments. The bunks are not big so the kid and mother may be a squeeze.

KTM has not been making money for years so they don%26#39;t really have a lot of money to upgrade the trains, so the compartments may appear a little worn. After staying in the luxurious KL Hilton..well...may take some getting used to for the train compartment...:-)

    M

It is not the train that is the problem but the tracks hence the rocking and rolling.

The bed linen was freshly iron and starched, it was the blankets that was infested

    nevita,

It might surprise u to know the second class sleepers(bunks) are more comfortable then being in first class.

I am 5 %26#39; tall and weight 49kilo%26#39;s yet found the first class bunk narrow, would suggest u might consider laying down a clean sheet on the floor for the baby.

At least the babe will be able to wiggle to her/his heart %26#39;s content and u get a cat nap along the track.

    cheers,

    jessie

It seems that most of you are suggesting that perhaps taking the overnight train to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore might not be the best option with family. Is it that bad? I havent booked anything yet and can easily go for one of the luxury coaches instead, please advise!

We are now staying in Kuala Lumpur for 2 days before we fly to Bali, and then flying back to Singapore, taking train/coach back to Kuala Lumpur.

Where would you advise we stay for the first 2 nights before we fly to Bali?

    Thank you for your time.

    Hi Nevita,

My husband and I booked first class cabin night train from KUL/SIN and the prices included breakfast. The cabin size was ok, two berth bed, the bed sheet, linen and blanket was clean, it has bathroom with shower, toilet and a small sink. As for the breakfast, it was a normal breakfast and of course one could not expect to be given breakfast like in Orient Express train! Our cabin server was a nice man, who took our order from breakfast and wakes us up before reaching Singapore.

It is not advisable to bring a big baggage into the cabin due to the limited spaces. But believe me the cabin is way much better than the cabin in Europe. My husband got phobia when we travel to Zurich from Vienna with their first class cabin...it is toooo small!

We did sleep well that night except when the train stop for the immigration check up!

We came back with morning train first class seating from SIN/KUL and it was a good ride and the seat is very comfortable.

Well, it is up to individual, if you have big expectation, am sure you will not enjoy it but if you just want a clean and comfortable train then you will enjoy the trip.

You could take with you sandwiches, water or fruits just in case you didnt like the food on the train.

You could take luxury coach but you will not have the privacy of a cabin especially travellng with children.

Hope you choose the best for you and your family.

    Hi Nevita,

I have used both the night train and luxury coach to Singapore from KL several times. It is true that the train journey tends to be quite rocky because of the prewar single track and you may not sleep well with all the train stops especially during prolonged station stops.

I have used only the second class bunker sleeper which I find very spacious and comfortable (upper berth has low ceiling, hence the lower price) compared the one in Europe which are seats turned into beds but Austrian OBB/German DB night trains are generally new and smooth riding.

I have only peeked into the first class cabin via the very narrow walkway and think the small cabin is not worth the price and privacy for. If you really want to experience the night train, go for the second class sleeper berth where you just put your luggage besides your bed but bring your own snack as buffet car has nothing to eat.

For some reason, many night train patrons are Indian tourists. Otherwise, the first and second class cabins are mostly used by backpackers who want to experience Malaysian trains.

If you want comfort and style, try to take Aeroline luxury coach which takes 5 - 5.5 hours between KL and Singapore. They operate as if you are flying with serving of water, coffee/tea and a meal. This eliminates the normal 30 mins stop for rest with most other express buses.

    https://www.aeroline.com.sg/sin_kul.html

Better still, Transtar has even more space, seat with massaging function and indiviual LCD screen.

    http://www.transtar.com.sg/firstclass.php

Otherwise, take the cheaper but also luxrious Grassland coach

    http://www.grassland.com.sg/coach.html

With luxury coach so cheap and with so many extras, it is no wonder fewer and fewer people are taking the train. We just wait and see if the proposed double train track (half the journey time) and the 90 mins high speed train will be realised within 5 years time.

Thanks Alex for such an informative reply. Thanks to everyone for thier comments. I think I will give the train a miss and use the coach instead. Transtar looks fantastic!
